A triathlete dies in the IRONMAN 70.3 Alcudia

According to an official IRONMAN statement, a triathlete who participated yesterday in the IRONMAN 70.3 Alcudia died during the swimming segment.

The deceased was of foreign nationality according to official sources.

This is the statement:

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of a participant in the IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia – Mallorca triathlon.

During the swim portion of Saturday's race, swim safety personnel recognized the athlete in distress and provided immediate medical attention. The athlete was transported to the medical tent where, despite medical efforts, the athlete passed away.

We share our deepest condolences with the athlete's family and friends and will continue to offer them our support in these difficult times.

We thank the swim security staff and first responders who worked quickly to provide the athlete with medical assistance."

More than 4.000 triathletes took part in the IRONMAN Mallorca and in the 70.3 from the first hour of the morning with a swimming sector of between 3,8 km or 1,9 for the short test.

In the 70.3 the victory went to the Frenchman William Mennesson with a time of 3:57:56, while in women it was the Englishwoman Emma Pallant (4:25:36) who took the victory.
