Portocolom prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary

Mario Mola will compete again in the test

El Portocolom International Triathlon will celebrate its 2th anniversary on April 25 in what will be one of the most anticipated editions and which will open the European season in the municipality of Felanitx in Mallorca.

There are only a few weeks left to live the silver weddings of one of the triathlons best valued by the athletes themselves in all of Spain, which will be held under the 55.5 distance (500 meters of swimming, 50 kilometers of cycling segment and 5.000 meters of running) and the 111 distance (1.000 meters of swimming, 100km of cycling and 10km of running).

It will be a high-level edition, with the long-awaited return of the Belgian Michael Van Cleven, four consecutive times winner in Portocolom.

Among those registered are 25 nationalities represented, with 40% of foreign triathletes and a female participation of 20%.

Swimming will be in the Portocolom bay between sailboats, crystal clear waters and no waves.

The cycling segment will take place on a 50km circuit going up the mythical Puig de Sant Salvador and the foot race will once again take the triathletes to the famous lighthouse of the town, which is only open on the day of the event for the enjoyment of the athletes.

The goal is located in the heart of the Club Náutic de Portocolom after touring the streets of this beautiful, typically Mediterranean town.

25 YEARS OF HISTORY

Portocolom is synonymous with triathlon and talking about triathlon in Portocolom is talking about Jaume Vicens, the event's alma mater, pioneer of this sport in the Balearic Islands and a passionate visionary much loved by all who continues to be the event's director, since July 19, 1998, when barely 30 athletes jumped into the water in the first edition.

The test has gone through different stages, always in continuous evolution and transformation, always organized almost by hand and with great care, this being the basis of its success.

The Portocolom Triathlon will commemorate its 25 years of experience with exhibitions, news and many surprises throughout the weekend of April 2.

In terms of sports, the cycling route has been minimally varied to increase safety and the post-finish area has been moved to the Toni Peña municipal pavilion so that the participant's experience is even better and more relaxed.

The expo and other events are moved to the Sa Sínia-Francisca Caldentey Roig municipal building.

On Saturday, April 1, the duathlon for minors with the highest participation in the Balearic Islands will be held, the “TriKids”, and after the evening technical meeting there will be a “torrada” with a concert to celebrate so many years of top-level sport in Felanitx.

MARIO MOLA AND ALEJANDRO SANTAMARIA, LUXURY AMBASSADORS

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the most universal Mallorcan triathlete, Mario Mola, he will once again be an ambassador of the test, as he did in 2022, when he unquestionably won the 55.5 distance.

The three-time world triathlon champion and one of the best Spanish athletes in history is in love with Portocolom: “The Portocolom Triathlon is one of the mythical tests of this sport at a European level.

It is a very special and exquisite triathlon in terms of its organization, with a very high level of quality, which treats all athletes in an incredible way, and has a very fun and ideal format to enjoy this unique environment in the bay, the roads around Felanitx and the ascent to Sant Salvador, to end up running through the old town and around the Portocolom lighthouse.

As a local athlete I am very proud to join the Balearic triathlete community again in 2023”, assures Mola.

For its part, another classic in this test, the mythical Alejandro Santamaría, he will compete again in Portocolom (test that he has done on several occasions, the last in 2012) and also becomes an ambassador.

THE KING OF PORTOCOLOM IS BACK: VAN CLEVEN

The true king of Portocolom is Michael VanCleven.

The Belgian suffered an accident in the cycling sector when he was about to achieve his fifth consecutive victory in the 111.

After a very tough round, with a pandemic in the middle, Van Cleven is back at a good level and will arrive in Mallorca in April and continue making history in his favorite competition to face the winner of 2022 and who holds the current test record, Swedish Robert Callin.

The elite list that will accompany these two triathletes is very powerful again, with the Balearic Joan Nadal, Miguel Ángel Fidalgo y Miguel Fernandez Miniño among others, accompanied by international pro triathletes such as Jarmo Rissanen, Timothy Van Houtem, Niccolo Bombonati o Mark Livesey.

In women, the Swiss stands out Emma Bilham, who already knows what it is to win in Portocolom, and will measure his forces with Caroline Livesey, Eloise DuLuart, rebecca robisch o Alexandra Tondeur.

The Paralympic triathlete will also start Alejandro Sánchez Palomero competing in the distance 55.5.

The Portocolom Triathlon is organized by Kumulus and the Club Triatló Portocolom, with the support of the Felanitx City Council and with the sponsorship of the European Union Next GenerationEU, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the Agency of Tourism Strategy of the Government of the Balearic Islands (AETIB) and the Fundació Mallorca Turisme
