Presentation of the Ring competitions, Cáceres

More than 500 athletes from about 30 countries, including the Spanish world champion Iván Raña and his Swiss Olympic counterpart Olivier Marceu, will participate on the 30th in the Gabriel y Galán reservoir (Cáceres) in the I Cross Triathlon World Championship and as many, on May 1, at the I Ibero-American and Spain Duathlon Cross.

The tests were presented today in Mérida by the Councilor for Youth and Sports, Carlos Javier Rodríguez, and by the president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, José Hidalgo.

Athletes from some thirty countries will take part in the World Championship, especially from Spain, with 293 registered, the United States, with 63, and the United Kingdom, which has 29.

Among them are Ivan Raña, Spanish champion of the World of Triathlon in 2003; Olivier Marceau, former Swiss World Champion in Olympic Triathlon; Eneko Llanos, Spanish Long Distance Triathlon European Champion in 2010; Y Ainhoa ​​Murúa, twice Olympic and the best classified Spanish in the world.

 

The most prominent Extremadurans are Francisco Fernández-Cortés, Iberian and Spanish runner-up in Cross Triathlon in 2010, and Miriam Casillas, international participant in triathlon and duathlon cross.

The counselor has said that the celebration of these tests, which will be held at the facilities of the International Center for Innovation in the Natural Environment "El Anillo", are due to the joint work of public and private administrations, athletes and technicians, and that they will also count with a remarkable number of volunteers.

In this sense, he explained that one of the institutions involved, the Higher Sports Council, has invested one million euros in improvements in the area, a "legacy" that will remain in the region.

He has also underlined the economic scope of these championships since it is expected that athletes and their companions will make about 3.500 overnight stays in hotel establishments in the area, which would give benefits of about 600.000 euros.

For his part, the president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation has stressed that "there was no benchmark" for this type of championship and that these tests set "the bar quite high".

In this line, he has mentioned the "spectacular" number of participating countries, not initially foreseen by the organization or by international sports bodies, and by the quality of the athletes that will be present, among which Iván Raña, Eneko Llano, Ainhoa Muría and Olivier Marceu.
