The oldest triathlon in Spain started with the swimming segment that was developed in the lagoon of Club Santa. The triathletes entered the water at low tide and the times when leaving the water were somewhat slower than in previous editions, although equality prevailed in both male and female leadership.

Tenerife's Karim Balli, Juan Luis Díaz and Raúl Lecuona were ahead of Fernando Marian and Filip Van Craenenbroeck. Among the females, the exit of the water between the leaders was also quite equal with Delioma González at the head, followed by Michelle Vesterby, Irene Fleitas, Raquel Quevedo Corinne Abraham.

At the beginning of the bike segment the wind was barely blowing but the heat that reigned in Lanzarote was suffocating. The triathletes faced the first kilometers of cycling knowing the need to hydrate well during the rest of the race.

The Belgian Bert Jammaer took advantage of the bike to take the lead, a position he would no longer abandon until he crossed the finish line. He was followed by Raúl Lecuona and Rayco Marrero, who started the race segment with positive feelings.

In the female category, the British Corinne Abraham also placed leader, a position that she would maintain until the end of the test. He was followed in the second transition by Michelle Vesterby and Saleta Castro. The triathletes then began the last segment that consisted of walking on foot to finish crossing the finish line at the Club La Santa stadium. Bert Jammaer  He confirmed his first position by crossing the finish line with a time of 1: 57: 51. The second place went to the Canary Rayco Marrero, that improved its third position of the previous year with a time of 2: 00: 24. The podium was closed by the British Colin Morris (2: 00: 42) leaving Raúl Lecuona at the doors of the podium. Daniel Armas was the seventh fastest in the finish line.

The winner Bert Jammaer explained at the end of the test that his "swimming had been a bit slower than those of the youngest triathletes, that's normal, on the bike I found it hard to find the rhythm. I think I was thinking that it was the IRONMAN because I passed the point of return and was going up to Teguise, is that I do not know the route very well, "he commented with laughter. "I managed to recover and pass the leaders in the descent to Famara and I am very happy with the victory," concluded the Belgian triathlete who won the 2015 Volcano Triathlon.

For Rayco Marrero "being second here is not easy. Last year I was third, this year I improved a little, second, but the truth is that bad sensations, on the bike was not good at all, it cost me a lot, luckily running I could go up but today has been a very hard day. The heat and I have not been well, I have been ear infections for a few days, I have not slept well, I think it will be that, really bad "explained the Tenerife resident who already has his eyes on the IRONMAN Lanzarote.

In third position was Colin Morris, who was surprised with his result because "only seven weeks ago I had surgery and I had to stop training to recover. I've been to the island many times and I also tend to compete at this distance often, which is why I'm used to it. I have always been a runner and I managed to advance a lot in the final straight. Now I only think about competing in the IRONMAN 70.3 in the month of September. "

In the women Corinne Abraham He did not give his opponents options and he won the Volcano Triathlon with solvency (2:09:19). The podium did not vary with respect to the arrival of the cycling segment, remaining Michelle Vesterby in second place (2: 12: 22) and the Spanish Saleta Castro, settled in Lanzarote most of the year, was in third position (2: 18: 32), propping up his preparation for the IRONMAN Lanzarote that the next 23 of May is celebrated.

The British Corinne Abraham explained that she was "training on the island this week and the truth is that I did not know that the Volcano Triathlon was celebrated, that's why I signed up so late. The event has been fantastic, the environment and the conditions, perfect. I made a great effort today because I knew that Michelle was behind throughout the race. I wanted to ask the legs more than I was allowed but I felt very strong from the beginning to the end. It has been a perfect training for the IRONMAN Texas which is the next important event on my agenda "

One of the favorites, the Danish Michelle Vesterby stated that she was happy with her performance, “I finished with a good time. I have the advantage of being better at swimming than the others but I have lost a bit of time by passing a large group of men who had gone out before. The last time I raced Corinne was in Hawaii last year, when she finished XNUMXth and I XNUMXth, she is a strong athlete and may one day win the IRONMAN of Hawaii".

For Saleta Castro, third classified, "it was a very tough race because this week has been very hard training, I have not found all the good I expected but it is due to fatigue and the good sign is that I have still been able to make a good I race and feel very strong until the end. The good thing is that it has been quite hot and little wind, it may be that the day of the IRONMAN come out like this and it comes very well to get used to it ".

The Canarian triathlete Patricia Díaz, best Canarian triathlete of the 2014 when adding the most points in the Canary Triathlon Series, finally occupied the fourth position.

The Volcano Triathlon is an Olympic triathlon that scores for the classification of the Canary Series of Triathlon. The roads of Lanzarote will continue to observe a large number of cyclists in the coming weeks as the Volcano Triathlon has been a foretaste of the largest triathlon in Spain, the IRONMAN Lanzarote, which will be played on rabbit lands next 23 in May.
