A new headquarters on the island of Sardinia for the WTCS

The town of Alghero, located on the Italian island of Sardinia, has been confirmed as the venue for the third round of the 2025 World Triathlon Series.

This new venue replaces Cagliari, the city that has been hosting the competition for the last three years.

The news was announced by World Triathlon, which brought forward the date to May 31 and confirmed that the event will be held over Olympic distance, i.e. 1.500 metres of swimming, 40 kilometres of cycling and 10 kilometres of running.

Institutional support and continuity in Sardinia

El Italian Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi, was very positive about the fact that this coastal enclave will host the competition for the next three years: “Including Alghero in the World Series confirms Sardinia as a tourist and sporting destination all year round.”

In turn, the Mayor of Alghero, Raimondo Cacciotto, said: “We are particularly proud to host this top-level sporting event. We enthusiastically welcome the Federation, the athletes, their families and the fans.”

New Olympic cycle towards Los Angeles 2028

This move to Alghero coincides with the symbolic start of a new Olympic cycle for many triathletes, already thinking about Los Angeles 2028.

Much of the circuit is arriving with significant absences after the Abu Dhabi and Yokohama stages, which generates expectations around the line-up for the coming seasons.

El President-elect of World Triathlon, Antonio Arimany, especially thanked the Italian Triathlon Federation for its involvement:

"I would like to thank the Italian Triathlon Federation for their incredible support in organising this event. After more than eight years on this beautiful island, we are excited to move to a new venue while continuing to collaborate with experienced organisers.”.

International projection and sporting legacy

The support of the Sardinia region has also been crucial. Tourism assessor, Franco Cuccureddu, he pointed out: “The round in Alghero is an extraordinary opportunity to position Sardinia as a sporting destination of excellence, combining high-level competition with the charm of the island and our famous hospitality.” In addition, the president of the Italian Triathlon Federation, Riccardo Giubilei, he stressed: “Launching the World Series in Alghero means kicking off an exciting era for our sport.”

After the experience with Cagliari, which hosted the Triathlon World Championship in recent years and even four editions of the World Cup, Alghero takes on the challenge of maintaining and improving the footprint of this sport in Sardinia.

The final route and programme will be announced in the coming weeks, but a unique setting is already anticipated, with a layout that will run through the Mediterranean waters and historic streets of the city.
