There will be no Frómista Triathlon in 2025

The Frómista Triathlon, one of the most popular events in the Spanish triathlon scene, will not be held in 2025.

After 9 editions, the organizing team, led by Borja Butler, has made the difficult decision to put a pause on the history of the test.

The event, which for years has been a regular fixture in the sporting calendar of many triathletes, leaves behind a history of professionalism and dedication that, despite not having a paid team, managed to position itself among the best middle-distance events in Spain.

A successful journey

Since its first edition, the Frómista Triathlon has grown year after year, always remaining faithful to its principles: an authentic triathlon, far from massification, where drafting was prohibited and the athlete was the real priority. These values made the event special and won the affection of the participants.

The level of organisation of the triathlon, managed by a small team of “4 friends from the village”, as Borja defines them, was on a par with the big franchises.

In addition, the event broke several records, becoming considered the fastest middle-distance triathlon in Spain, both in the men's and women's categories.

The reasons for the decision

However, success has not been enough to sustain the continuity of the event.

Explains Borja Butler, one of the main reasons behind this decision was the personal exhaustion that the event caused him: “There came a time when the test did not let me sleep, that was a serious warning and the trigger,” he confessed in his official statement.

Added to this wear and tear are other factors such as the lack of structure in the club to continue organizing an event of this level of demand.

Although there was never a shortage of volunteers to help the event, the weight of the organisation fell almost entirely on a few people. “Ninety percent of the organisation depended on me,” admits Borja.

Another decisive blow has been the change in priorities of the Frómista City Council. In a recent statement, the municipal corporation made it clear that triathlon was no longer a priority, announcing the complete withdrawal of subsidies by 2025.

This situation, together with the political tensions following last year's municipal elections, has created an unsustainable scenario for continuing with the event.

The legacy of the Frómista Triathlon

Despite the sadness of its suspension, the Frómista Triathlon is saying goodbye on a high note. The event has been a benchmark in terms of organisation and authenticity, attracting triathletes from all over Spain. Its legacy includes not only the records achieved, but also having put Frómista on the map as a prestigious triathlon destination.

The event was characterized by offering a unique experience, with a different circuit and challenging swimming conditions in the Canal de Castilla.

Participants and their families always found Frómista to be a welcoming place, where they could enjoy not only the competition, but also the history and culture of the place.

The organizing team, an example of dedication

In Borja's words, if there is something he is especially proud of, it is the unity and effort of his team of volunteers:

“The volunteer team has been outstanding.” Despite not receiving any remuneration, they always worked hard to offer an unforgettable experience to all participants.
