Tragedy at the IRONMAN Calella-Barcelona: a triathlete dies during the swimming event
The IRONMAN Barcelona 2024 was in mourning this Sunday following the tragic death of a 41-year-old triathlete during the swimming section of the race.
According to the Catalan Emergency Medical System (SEM), the woman, of Russian origin, was found floating in the water at 10:29 a.m., near the beach of Calella, in the middle of the competition.
SEM personnel acted immediately and proceeded to remove the triathlete from the water, taking her to the shore to try to revive her.
Unfortunately, all efforts made to save his life were in vain, and his death could only be certified at the scene.
The causes of death are currently being investigated by the Civil Guard, although the first indications point to sudden death. The coroner will determine the exact cause in the coming days.
The tragedy has shaken the triathlon community, especially in the context of one of the toughest events on the world circuit.
10 editions of the event
The tenth edition of the HOMBRE DE HIERRO Calella-Barcelona had started with a festive atmosphere, bringing together more than 3.000 triathletes from around the world who sought to challenge their limits in the three demanding sections of swimming, cycling and running.
However, the event, which was intended to be a great sporting festival, has been marred by this sad incident.
This is not the first time that the event has been marked by tragedy. In the 2023 edition, an accident between two triathletes also ended with the death of one of them.
Such incidents are a reminder of the risks involved in extreme sports, and the importance of having a solid medical support system and safety measures during these events.
The event organisers have issued a statement expressing their deep regret for what happened and offering their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased triathlete.
"The victim received immediate attention from the medical team on site before being transferred to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he died during the journey," the organization said.
They have also reaffirmed their commitment to the safety of all participants, ensuring that they will review the protocols to avoid future incidents.
