The Santander City Triathlon will bring together more than five hundred athletes this Sunday
For the first time, the event will count towards the National Ranking of the Spanish Triathlon Federation
The Cantabrian capital will host this Sunday, September 22, the Santander City Triathlon, a well-established event on the national sports scene that this year will be counted in the National Ranking of the Spanish Triathlon Federation and that has managed to attract the interest of 550 national and foreign athletes.
As a novelty, to the already traditional Olympic distance (1.500 meters of swimming, 44 kilometers of cycling and 10,8 km of running), this year the middle distance or half ((1.900 meters of swimming, 80 kilometers of cycling and 21 kilometers of running).

The Councillor for Sport of the Santander City Council, Beatriz Pellón, and the president of the Triciclo Team Sports Club, Henry Conde, This morning they presented the sixth edition of the event, which was also attended by Silvia Ruiz, representative of the Cantabrian Triathlon Federation, and Cardigan, Head of Institutions at Banco Santander, one of the event's sponsors.
In addition, they attended Elisa Irureta y Chris Gutierrez, presidents of the Down Syndrome and Quality in Dependency foundations, respectively, whose organizations will receive the triathlon solidarity commitment this year.
Pellón stressed that for his council “it is an honour and a pleasure to repeat this triathlon in our city” and welcomed all the athletes “who make a great effort”.
He stressed the difference between a conventional race and a triathlon, highlighting the great commitment required to participate in this type of event. He also encouraged citizens to take to the streets on Sunday to support the triathletes.
For his part, Enrique Conde detailed the key aspects of a test that has become established in the national sports scene, attracting 550 triathletes, 80% of them from other autonomous communities and countries such as France, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic or Poland.
After Zarautz, we are the second triathlon in northern Spain with the most participants, the result of the work and commitment of the organization, the Federation and the Cantabrian institutions, such as the Santander City Council or the Government of Cantabria," said Conde.
He also thanked the support of private sponsors such as Banco Santander, Cantabria Labs, Soningeo, Adarsa, Greenkw and the more than 200 volunteers who will ensure safety on the streets of the capital.
Elite triathletes and spectacular route
The event will have the participation of Javier Gómez Noya, Olympic triathlete, five-time world champion and one of the most outstanding athletes in the recent history of triathlon.
Gómez Noya returns to Santander, a test that brings him luck and in which he was crowned champion in 2023. Along with him, other elite triathletes will compete such as Pello Osoro, Helene Alberdi, Ainhoa Murua, Irenal Arenal y Marina Muñoz, both members of the national team, as well as Diego Mentrida, just arrived from the Paralympic Games in Paris.
The Santander City Triathlon will start with the middle distance race at 08:30 from Playa de la Fenómeno, next to the Gamazo dam.
An hour later, the Olympic event will begin. The cycling route and the running race will cross the city, which will be closed to traffic, passing by emblematic places such as the Palacio de la Magdalena,
El Sardinero, the S-20 to the Port of Santander, the Botín Centre, Reina Victoria and Castelar. The Bay of Santander, one of the natural resources most praised by triathletes, will once again be the protagonist in this edition.
The event will award 12.000 euros in cash prizes for the absolute categories, both male and female, as well as various gifts for participants and raffles during the event.
Commitment to solidarity and institutional support
The Santander City Triathlon, which has become a benchmark in the Cantabrian and national calendar, will allocate a percentage of the registration fees of participants to the Down Syndrome Foundation of Cantabria and the Quality in Dependency Foundation.
The event is sponsored and supported by private companies, the General Directorate of Sports of the Government of Cantabria, CANTUR, the Port Authority and the City Council of Santander, through the Municipal Sports Institute. The organization also has the support of the Cantabrian Triathlon Federation and the Spanish Triathlon Federation.
