Vasco Rodrigues, Director of IRONMAN Portugal: “Cascais is the perfect setting for this event”

The next October 19, the city of Cascais will host the 11th edition of the IRONMAN Portugal Cascais, a sporting event that includes both the Full IRONMAN and the IRONMAN 70.3.

With a full house of registrations and growing international participation, this event has established itself as one of the most important in the calendar European triathlon.

From Triathlon News we have had the opportunity to speak with Vasco Rodrigues, Race Director of IRONMAN Portugal Cascais, who gave us details on the challenges and opportunities of organizing an event of this magnitude, as well as some key tips for triathletes and spectators.

“Cascais, an ideal setting”

Vasco, is part of the staff of  HOMBRE DE HIERRO since 2022, although his connection with the Cascais event dates back to its founding in 2017, when he held the position of competition manager at the Triathlon Federation of Portugal.

“I consider myself lucky to be able to organize both the HOMBRE DE HIERRO such as IRONMAN 70.3 in a place like CascaisAt the same time, it is a great responsibility.

It is difficult to find another place in the world more suitable: we are just 20 minutes from the capital, next to the sea, with mountains all around us and surrounded by history, castles, parks and museums.”

“In addition, Cascais is a small, attractive and safe town, where the community is very hospitable.

La Bay of Cascais It is a natural amphitheatre for this type of event, something that those who have witnessed the exciting start can confirm.”

Changes to the cycle route: safer and faster

This year, the cycling route has undergone some significant changes, designed to improve the safety and experience of triathletes.

“The main changes are in response to safety issues and the attractiveness of the route.

We start the cycling segment again using the road Guincho, allowing for a better scenic environment and greater fluidity in the first 10 km.

This helps triathletes get into a rhythm and prepare for the more undulating 25km that follow, also minimising the chances of Drafting. "

“In addition, we eliminated a more winding round trip section and replaced it with a greater incursion into Lisbon, with a wide, flat avenue that leads almost to the center of the capital.

In short, the journey will be faster, safer and with a better environment.”

Challenges as an organizer

When asked about the challenges of organizing an event of such magnitude, Vasco He answers us clearly:

“The key word is ‘challenge’. The challenge is to ensure that this event meets or exceeds the expectations of all those who have chosen it as their goal.

Luckily, I have an excellent team and the incomparable support of Cascais, from the Town Hall, Of the Security forces and the community at large. Everyone strives to make everything easier and more special.”

Tips for triathletes

For those who will participate in the test, Vasco Rodrigues offers you some useful tips for facing the competition:

“My suggestion is to arrive early and enjoy the event in its entirety. You have worked hard to be here, so savour every moment.

Practically speaking, it will be a long day, so prepare well. Remember that swimming is in the Ocean and the water will be cold.

In the bikeThe last 55 km of each lap are flat, which is where they will be able to go faster.

And the running course, although not very steep, is always undulating, which adds a constant challenge.”

Tips for companions

For spectators and companions who wish to follow the race, Vasco He told us:

“The main thing is to forget about the car on the day of the event. Cascais It is small and will be full of triathletes and spectators.

My recommendation is to walk or rent bicycles or scooters. It is also a good option to stay in the centre of Cascais, where triathletes will pass by several times.

The start, finish and transition areas are concentrated, so you can enjoy the race without having to move around too much.”

Special thanks

Finally, Vasco Rodrigues gives special thanks to a person who was key to the success of the event:

“I want to give a special thanks to Jorge Pereira, for having the vision and courage to bring this event to Portugal and Cascais, a municipality that welcomes the event like no other.”
