The Challenge Peguera-Mallorca is back, the best Challenge Family triathlon competition in 2019

The event will take place on October 16 and will summon more than 800 athletes

La Challenge Peguera-Mallorca, awarded as the best triathlon event in the Challenge Family Awards 2019, returns to the competition circuit in its seventh edition on October 16.

The organization and the residents of the Majorcan municipality of Calvià They are turning to the preparations for this international race that could not be held in 2020 due to Covid-19 and which returns this year with great expectations and a range of novelties, among others, a line of measures to make it more sustainable.

More than 800 registered

With more than 800 participants registered in the different events to date, this edition of the Challenge has the participation of world triathlon stars, such as the United Kingdom triathlete. Lucy Hall (winner of The Championship 2021) or the German Frederik funk (2nd in the 2021 European Middle Distance Championships held in Walchsee, Austria), as well as professional and amateur athletes from all continents.

In fact, more than 80 percent of the participants are foreigners, mainly from Europe.

It should be noted that the test supposes for professional athletes the last chance to score points in the Challenge Family ranking, that grants economic prizes among the first classified.

One of the most outstanding characteristics of this competition is that it tries to combine the essence of Calvià and the island of Mallorca along its route, in fact, the event takes place entirely in the Calvianer municipality.

Courses

The test begins at crystal clear waters of Playa de Torà and swim 1,9 kilometers through the Bay of Peguera.

The next stage, on a bicycle, consists of a double tour of a 45-kilometer circuit that crosses towns and coastal areas of Calviá in a technical route in some moments and fast in others.

The competition ends in a running on the boulevard and the walks of the beach of Peguera, where the residents and visitors of Calvià tend to concentrate to passionately encourage the triathletes in the final stage.

In addition to the logistical challenge posed by the Challenge, in which more than 500 volunteers participate of the municipality, the organization works in close coordination with local and regional authorities to ensure that the event takes place in conditions of maximum security against COVID-19.

A sustainable competition

The Challenge Peguera-Mallorca 2021 is characterized by a added effort to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically those referring to the fight against inequalities and against climate change.

On the one hand, the organization of the Challenge has signed collaboration agreements with the association of people with disabilities of Calvià to help give visibility to this group and promote their well-being.

In this way, the association has been integrated into the organization of the event and its associates will be part of the volunteer corps, will have reserved advertising spaces to make themselves known and will receive an economic contribution and sports equipment.

With regards to fight against climate change and the objective of making the Peguera-Mallorca Challenge an example of sustainability, the initiative Bosque Challenge has been launched, in which secondary school students from high schools in the area will plant a tree for each participant in the competition in a natural area that was ravaged by fire.

In addition, the organization will promote a campaign to eliminate single-use containers during the race and to reduce the use of plastic and paper as much as possible.

Joint effort

Challenge Peguera Mallorca is a example of project management in public-private partnership.

The event, organized by the Calvià Foundation 2004 and the Calvià Town Hall, has the collaboration of the Challenge Family, the AETIB (Government of the Balearic Islands), the Paguera and Cala Fornells hotel association, the sports clubs of the Calvià municipality, the Spanish Triathlon Federation and different international companies such as: Redbull, Powerbar, Abus or Wahoo.
