1 Spaniard among the 8 candidates for the presidency of World Triathlon

World Triathlon has announced the eight candidates who will compete for the presidency in the next elections, which will be held during the Congress in Torremolinos, on October 21, 2024.

This new mandate will mark a new era after 16 years at the head of the organization of Marisol Married.

Casado, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has decided not to run for re-election.

The candidates

The candidates who aspire to occupy his position are:

  • Dr. Debbie Alexander (RSA): With vast experience in sports and health, Dr. Alexander has been a tireless advocate for triathlon in Africa and globally.
  • Antonio Alvarez (MEX): Former triathlete and current sports leader, Alvarez has worked extensively in the development of triathlon programs in Latin America.
  • Antonio Arimany (ESP): Secretary General of World Triathlon, Arimany has been a key figure in the administration of the organization and in the implementation of innovative policies.
  • Michelle Cooper (AUS): President of Triathlon Australia, Cooper has driven the growth of women's and youth triathlon in her country.
  • Mads Freund (DEN): With a focus on sustainability and the environment, Freund has been a pioneer in organizing ecologically responsible events.
  • Ian Howard (GBR): Current president of the British Triathlon Federation, Howard has been a central figure in promoting inclusive and accessible triathlon.
  • Shin Otsuka (JPN): Former triathlete and sports leader, Otsuka has worked to promote triathlon in Asia, standing out for his strategic vision.
  • Tamas Toth (HUN): With a solid career as a triathlete and coach, Toth has contributed significantly to the development of triathlon in Eastern Europe.

All candidates have been officially approved by the World Triathlon Credentials Committee, ensuring that each one meets the strict eligibility criteria established by the organization.

The candidates submitted their candidatures with the support of their respective National Federations, before the deadline, confirming their commitment and willingness to lead the organization.

Who is Antonio Arimany,?

Antonio Arimany, General Secretary of World Triathlon since December 2016, has played a crucial role in the organization since his appointment.

Before assuming his current role, he was Director General of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) from 2014, and between 2010 and 2014, he served as Director of Legal Administration and Finance.

His experience in the Olympic movement is broad and diverse, having worked for the Athens Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and on several Olympic bids.

Arimany was the regional manager of relations and services with the National Olympic Committees (NOC) of the Americas during the Athens Olympic and Paralympic Games, demonstrating his ability to manage complex international relationships.

In addition, his experience includes key roles in both winter and summer bids: he was General Director of the Jaca Olympic Bid for the 2014 Winter Games, worked on the Madrid Olympic bid for the 2012 Games and, subsequently, in the 2016 candidacy, where he managed the candidacy office.

Born in Madrid in 1968, Antonio Arimany He began his sports career in alpine skiing. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Law and Business Administration, a Master's Degree in Management of Sports Entities and a Doctorate in Environmental Taxation.
