More than 20.000 athletes will compete this weekend in the major triathlon events

More than 20.000 athletes will compete this weekend, September 12 and 13, in six major triathlon-related events, with the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice and the last WTCS before Pontevedra among the main events.

The figure comes from adding up only some of the competitions with available participation data: nearly 10.000 athletes in the three Challenge Family events , more than 6.500 in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship , around 3.000 in IRONMAN Wales and more than 2.000 in IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast.

And the actual volume will be even higher. That calculation does not include the participants in the WTCS Karlovy Vary or the 1.200 bib numbers expected for the closing of the Iberdrola and Suzuki Leagues in Los Arenales del Sol , among other competitions on the calendar.

More than 20.000 athletes at six major events

Only the following events allow us to comfortably surpass the 20.000 participant mark:

Event Date Announced participation
Challenge Almere-Amsterdam, Esprit Montréal and Challenge Samarkand 12-13 September Approximately 10.000
IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship Nice 12-13 September More than
IRONMAN Wales September 13 Around 3.000
IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast September 13 More than

The figures are based on data provided by organizers and entities associated with each event. The calculation is deliberately conservative and does not include other competitions for which we do not have a comparable number of unique athletes.

In the case of Challenge Family, the figure of nearly 10.000 corresponds to the total number of participants in the sports programs in Almere-Amsterdam, Montreal, and Samarkand. Not all of them necessarily compete in a triathlon , as the Almere program also includes other disciplines.

Nice hosts more than 6.500 triathletes from 130 countries

The biggest gathering of the weekend will be in France. The IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship Nice 2026 will bring together more than 6.500 triathletes from 130 countries, regions, and territories.

Around 3.000 women will compete on Saturday, September 12 , while some 3.500 men will do so on Sunday, September 13. Between the two days, more than 140 professionals will also be vying for world titles.

The championship is contested over 1,9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling and 21,1 kilometers of running , with a route that combines the coast of Nice and the terrain of the interior of the Maritime Alps.

To follow the races from Spain, TN has also prepared a guide with the schedules and options to watch the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice live.

Challenge Family brings together nearly 10.000 athletes across three continents

Challenge Family faces one of its busiest weekends, with nearly 10.000 athletes spread across the Netherlands, Canada and Uzbekistan.

Challenge Almere-Amsterdam takes place on Saturday, September 12, with the main triathlon events sold out, and will also host the European Long Distance Triathlon Championship.

The following day it will be the turn of SAIL Challenge Esprit Montréal , with more than 4.500 participants , and Challenge Samarkand.

The Uzbekistan race will also have a strong professional component. Among the announced names are Sam Laidlow, who has chosen Challenge Samarkand as his final test before Kona , Will Draper, and the Spanish rider Sara Pérez Sala.

Another 5.000 athletes between Wales and the Sunshine Coast

IRONMAN Wales will also take place on Sunday in Tenby, one of the best-known long-distance races on the British calendar. The 2026 edition will bring together around 3.000 participants.

Thousands of kilometers away, in Australia, the IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast will once again bring together more than 2.000 triathletes in Mooloolaba in an edition with sold-out entries.

Karlovy Vary closes the World Series regular season

On Sunday, September 13, the WTCS Karlovy Vary 2026 will also take place , the eighth and final event of the World Triathlon Championship Series regular season before the Grand Final in Pontevedra.

The Czech event will also be of direct interest to Spanish triathlon . David Cantero arrives after finishing second in the WTCS Weihai and is considered one of the country's main hopes for a race that could alter the positions of the favorites heading into the final.

Cassandre Beaugrand will not be competing in the women's category . The Frenchwoman leads the ranking with 4.000 points after winning all four WTCs she has contested this season, so her rivals will have one last chance in Karlovy Vary to improve their score before Pontevedra.

The WTCS Grand Final in Pontevedra will be held from September 23 to 27 and will decide the 2026 world titles.

Los Arenales gathers 1.200 jersey numbers at the close of the national leagues

The Spanish calendar will also have one of its focuses in Los Arenales del Sol, where the Iberdrola and Suzuki Leagues will be decided with three Spanish Championships spread between Saturday and Sunday.

FETRI has announced 1.200 bib numbers for the final rounds, with 214 teams from 50 clubs . The program includes 447 athletes in the Spanish SuperSprint Club Championship, 200 in Mixed Relays, and 450 in the 2x2 SuperSprint Club Championship.

These competitions are joined by the 1st Platges d'Elx Sprint Triathlon , which will have another 170 participants . These figures are not included in the overall count of more than 20.000 athletes because a single triathlete can compete in several events for clubs and generate more than one race bib over the weekend.

A weekend with competitions all over the world

In just 48 hours, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship , the European Long Distance Championship, several IRONMAN and Challenge Family events, the last WTCS before the Grand Final , and three Spanish Championships will all coincide.

The more than 20.000 participants counted correspond to only six of the weekend's major events. The total number of athletes taking part between Saturday and Sunday will therefore be significantly higher.
