Alex Yee will pace Emile Cairess in London and delays his return to the WTCs

Alex Yee will run the 2026 London Marathon as a pacemaker for Emile Cairess on April 26, a decision that leaves the British Olympic champion out of the WTCS Samarkand, scheduled for that same weekend.

The British Olympic champion is once again prioritizing athletics on a weekend that coincides with the first event of the triathlon world circuit.

The British triathlete is turning his attention back to athletics at the start of 2026. This time, not to achieve a personal best, but to take on a very specific role in one of the major events on the international calendar: to help Emile Cairess at the London marathonwhere the British long-distance runner will attempt to approach the historical records of Mo Farah.

The test will be held on Sunday April 26.

A change of plans with a direct impact on triathlon

The most immediate consequence of that decision is clear: Alex Yee will not be on the start list for the WTCS Samarkand 2026 at the moment., a quote that appears within the official WTCS 2026 calendar for 25 y 26 de abril in Uzbekistan.

It's certainly a striking move. Yee had hinted at his intention to return to triathlon in 2026 after his marathon-focused period, but this choice confirms that his return to the world circuit won't come at the first stop of the World Triathlon Championship Series.

For now, its clearest presence within the WTCS calendar remains the proof of London, scheduled for July 25.

From Valencia to London: a favor returned

The story has quite a bit of context behind it. In the Valencia Marathon, December 2025, Emile Cairess It was an important piece in Yee's career.

The British long-distance runner helped him with the pace, and that effort ended with a tremendous result: 2:06:38 for the triathlete, the second-best ever time for a Briton in a marathon.

Now the tables have turned. Cairess will arrive in London with an ambitious goal: to improve his personal best. 2:06:46 and get so close to Mo Farah's British record (2:05:11) as the best time ever recorded by a Briton on the London course, 2:05:39.

Alex Yee changes roles at home

After debuting in London in 2025 and taking an even bigger leap in Valencia months later, Alex Yee will return to his hometown's big marathon in a different role.

He will not be running to complete the 26,2 miles in search of his own record, but to help from within the race another Briton who wants to enter historic territory.

For international triathlon, his absence in Samarkand removes one of the big names from the start of the season.

For British athletics, however, it adds a very valuable piece to a race where Cairess will try to get closer to a record that still has a lot of symbolic weight in the United Kingdom.

This shift also fits with the line that the Briton had already been showing in his commitment to the marathon, as we explained when we discussed Why had Alex Yee focused on London?.
