Alex Yee launches his Lewisham triathlon to inspire young people

Alex Yee, the most successful triathlete in Olympic history with four medals (two gold, one silver, and one bronze), has returned to his roots to launch an initiative that promises to leave its mark.

The Briton, born and raised in Lewisham, has created the Alex Yee Triathlon, a charity event for children that took place last week in his hometown and brought together almost 1.000 participants.

An event with a purpose: sport, culture and community

The initiative, called “Lewisham to the World", aims to empower the youth in their neighborhood Through sports, art, and the example of successful local figures. Yee summed it up this way on social media:

“The triathlon was, and still is, my goal. Today, 757 children have had the opportunity to try it… but also to discover 13 different music, theater, dance, and sports activities they can try this summer, free of charge.”

A reference that never forgets its beginnings

Before being crowned Olympic champion, Yee was already standing out at the London Youth Games, the Mini Marathon and other local competitions. He received grants from the City Council to cover travel expenses and was awarded the Mayor's Special Achievement Award.

During the event, he not only signed autographs and ran alongside the children, but also shared anecdotes about his first steps in triathlon and encouraged other athletes and neighborhood leaders to get involved in the initiative.

Triathlon as an excuse to open doors

El Alex Yee Triathlon is not limited to the three classic segments of the sport. The event served as a platform to present cultural and artistic alternatives to the kids.

“We want kids to find their purpose as early as possible,” Yee said. “It could be triathlon… or it could be playing the piano, acting, painting—whatever they’re passionate about.”

A summer full of opportunities for young people in Lewisham

Following the success of this first edition, Yee's foundation plans to organize more events throughout the year. The goal: create a network of free activities, accessible and professionally run, that offer real alternatives to the youth of the area.

“This is just the beginning. Together, we can continue creating opportunities.”
