Alex Yee: “I thought I had lost it… but no”
The Olympic champion Alex Yee He's back. After months away from the circuit due to an injury following the London Marathon, the Briton has made a grand comeback in the Toronto Super Tri, taking the victory with authority and a smile on his face.
Return after the marathon and injury
Yee had focused his first semester on preparing and running the London marathon (2:11:08, 14th in the men's elite), but that adventure left him with peroneal tendinopathy. This foot ailment forced him to stop for weeks.
Toronto, therefore, was his first triathlon of the year, a test to "see how the body responded," as he explained before the event.
Explosive format in Canada
The Supertri was contested in a triple format: three heats of 300m swimming, 4km cycling and 1,6km running, with six minutes rest between rounds. Yee, competing for the Brownlee Racing, was dominant and said afterwards:
"When you do your first race of the year, you think you've lost everything... but I still have it. This has given me back my confidence."
Happy, relaxed, and visibly excited, the Olympic and world champion felt part of the circuit again:
“I enjoyed every second. Triathlon gives me purpose. I'll never take these moments for granted. Thank you all.”
At 27, Yee remains one of the world's greatest triathlon talents. His time in the marathon has taught him new lessons that he now seeks to apply to his home sport.
Next goal: World Series in France
After this explosive test, Yee is already looking towards his next big challenge: la WTCS from the French Riviera on August 31, on a key circuit to close the season strongly and re-enter the fight for the world's top 5.
In Toronto, moreover, his team had a great day, since jolien vermeylen took the win in the women's event. For her part, Jonny Brownlee failed to advance beyond the first round.
