Two championships, one weekend: does it make sense to have Almere and Nice on the same day?

The European Long Distance Championship in Almere and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice will coincide on the weekend of September 12 and 13, with a direct overlap between the women's races on Saturday.

They're not the same distance, they don't belong to the same circuit, and they're not organized by the same person. But Challenge Almere-Amsterdam and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice will share virtually the same competitive window and will vie for the attention of fans, professionals, and the media.

The calendar has placed two major European championships practically one on top of the other. And the question is simple: does it make sense?

On Saturday the 12th, the women's clash is direct

The most obvious example is in the women's category. According to the currently published official program, the European Long Distance Triathlon Championship will begin in Almere on Saturday, September 12th at 07:10 a.m. with the elite women's race. The men will start at 07:25 a.m.

Just ten minutes earlier, the professional women's start of the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship is scheduled to begin in Nice.

The men's World Championships in Nice will be held on Sunday the 13th, so the competition schedule isn't identical for men and women. But throughout the weekend, two major championships will simultaneously be vying for the attention of the international triathlon community.

Two different distances, but profiles that can coincide

Almere will crown the European champions over a 3,8-kilometer swim, 180-kilometer bike ride, and 42,2-kilometer run . Nice will decide the IRONMAN 70.3 world champions over a 1,9-kilometer swim, 90-kilometer bike ride, and 21,1-kilometer run.

The difference in distance reduces the conflict, but doesn't eliminate it. Modern professional triathlon boasts numerous athletes capable of competing in both middle and long distances, so for certain athletes, preparing for one of these championships necessarily means ruling out the other.

Nice is also one of the major competitive hubs of the IRONMAN season and will have significant international coverage. In Spain, the championship can be followed via RTVE Play and the various IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship broadcast options.

Almere, for its part, is offering the European Long Distance Championship and 50.000 euros in prizes , with 6.250 euros for each champion.

Almere also reaches a historic edition

The coincidence is particularly striking because Challenge Almere-Amsterdam celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2026. The Dutch city is also turning 50, and the organizers have prepared a special program around the race.

Almere is not a minor event on the European calendar either. At the beginning of 2026, it was chosen by the participants themselves as the Challenge Family Race of the Year 2025.

This year's edition also includes an unusual new feature. At 17:00 PM, the new Challenge Almere-Amsterdam Marathon will begin , with participants using much of the same running route and sharing the course with the triathletes still competing.

Everything is ready for one of the most special editions of Almere. The problem is that it will have to find its niche while much of the triathlon world's attention is focused on Nice.

An international calendar that is increasingly difficult to fit in

It doesn't seem reasonable to blame a single organization. Europe Triathlon and Challenge Family manage Almere, while IRONMAN organizes its own international calendar . Each organization has its own dates, venues, and priorities.

The problem arises when the calendar is viewed from outside each circuit.

The growing number of championships, series, and major events makes finding free weekends increasingly difficult. But coincidences like this can divide attention, influence the decisions of some professionals, and reduce the exposure of one of the competitions.

And when one of them is an IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, the risk of the European Long Distance Championship being overshadowed becomes obvious.

Does it make sense to pair them?

From the individual logic of each organizer, it's understandable. From a global perspective of sport, it doesn't seem like the ideal scenario.

Especially in the women's category, where the European Long Distance Championship in Almere and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice will start practically at the same time.

There's no need to imagine a single calendar for all international triathlon. But greater coordination among the main organizers could better protect each championship, foster broader professional fields, and give each competition its own window of visibility.

The weekend of September 12th and 13th will be packed with triathlon events. The question is whether two championships with enough prestige to warrant their own showcase needed to share it.
