Official statement: Bilbao Triathlon 2025 adapts to extreme heat
Last weekend, the Bilbao Triathlon 2025, one of the most anticipated national events in the middle distance, experienced an important twist: the distance Half was shortened to Olympic (standard) due to the high temperatures expected at the time of departure.
The decision, which surprised many registered triathletes, was made based on criteria of security and health. This is how he explained it Alaitz Fernández Munárriz, technical delegate of the event, in a statement issued by the organization after the event.
Who made the decision and why?
Alaitz Fernández Munárriz, technical delegate of the event and representative of the Basque Triathlon Federation (Bizkaia), was appointed by the FETRI since December as the event's top technical officer. Her role: to ensure the safety, health and well-being of all participants.
In his words:
“I was concerned about the weather situation, and on Friday I scheduled a crisis meeting for Saturday at 14:00 p.m. to make a final decision among several options I was considering, along with the Medical Delegate, the Organizing Committee, and a member of the advisory team.”
During the meeting, the index WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) was located in 32ºC, which indicated a risk between Very High (red flag) y Extreme (black flag)Given this scenario, the decision was made to reduce the distance to Olympic, seeking to minimize the risk of heat exhaustion or other related incidents.
According to the technical delegate's statement:
"I regret having to make this drastic decision, but it was the best course of action under the circumstances, especially for the athletes, volunteers, organizers, and race officials. We were unharmed, and all participants were able to participate in a triathlon."
The change preserved the competitive spirit of the event, ensuring everyone could cross the finish line without compromising their health.

An edition marked by heat… and responsibility
El Bilbao Triathlon has once again demonstrated its commitment to the safety of the triathlon community. While the distance change may have been disappointing for some athletes, the decision prevented further damage on a day marked by stifling heat.
Finally, Alaitz Fernández wanted to send a message of encouragement:
"I wish Bilbao Triathlon the best for future editions and for all the athletes who can continue enjoying our sport. Thank you for your understanding."
