Calahorra debuts as the venue for a national FETRI
The next 26 & 27 of July, the city of Calahorra will experience for the first time a Spanish Triathlon Championship, gathering about 1.600 triathletes from all over the country in the disciplines of Cros Triathlon, Cros Duathlon and Aquathlon.
The event, which will be held in the categories Cadet, Youth, Junior, U23, Elite, Paratriathlon and Age Groups, represents a milestone for both La Rioja and local sport.
A perfect natural environment for triathlon
The circuit has been designed to make the most of the Riojan landscapes. Swimming will take place in the El Perdiguero reservoir, while the cycling and running segments will take place on the surrounding trails and the Cidacos Parkrespectively.
During the official presentation, held in the town hall's plenary hall, the mayor Monica Arceiz highlighted the positive impact of the championship:
"This event will raise the profile of Calahorra and its natural spaces, and demonstrates our ability to host high-level sporting events."
Competition schedule and program
El Saturday 26 of July will start with Cross Triathlon Championship in the morningFollowed by Aquathlon in the afternoon.
Departures will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will continue until 13:00 p.m., resuming activities from 16:30 p.m. to 19:30 p.m.
El Sunday 27 it will be the turn of the Duathlon Cros, with departures only in the morning from 9:00 a.m.
The departures and arrivals will be distributed between the reservoir and the park, with routes that will cover points such as Torrescas, Caricente Source y Marcú.
From July 21, the trails affected by the competition will be marked. Access to the reservoir via South Tejerías, leaving towards the industrial estate to avoid congestion.
A key step for Riojan sport
The event also represents an institutional achievement for the region. The Minister of Sports, José luis pérez, stressed that:
"La Rioja has the potential to become a regular venue for national and international competitions."
For his part, the president of the FETRI, José Hidalgo, highlighted the clear commitment to Calahorra and La Rioja as new sports destinations. Juantxo Ochoa, president of the Riojan Federation, stressed the union between tourism and sport as key to regional development.
