Challenge Roth publishes drafting data for the first time

July 6th was a unique day in long-distance triathlon. Not only because of the victory of Sam Laidlow y Laura Philipp at the prestigious DATEV Challenge Roth, but also by an unprecedented milestone in the history of sport: the full publication of the system's data race ranger, Manager measure drafting electronically and objective in professional triathletes.

Total transparency: zero cheating up front

For the first time, following an initiative proposed by the Sam Laidlow At the pre-race technical meeting, the full report was made public, including the times each PRO spent inside the drafting zone (less than 12 meters). The result? Impressive.

The champion of the world HOMBRE DE HIERRO 2023 laidlow, and the German Laura Philipp registered 0 seconds in an illegal zone for more than 240 minutes of cycling.

In men, Jonas Schomburg It also remained spotless, while Jan Stratman accumulated just 4 seconds. In women, Grace thek (14”) and alani siffert (5”) also bordered on perfection.

What is RaceRanger and why is it so important?

RaceRanger is an electronic system that uses distance sensors to objectively and accurately record potential drafting violations. It no longer relies solely on the judge's human eye, but rather on a verifiable, technological measurement.

El report It excludes areas with high crowd density (such as Solarer Berg), the first and last 500 metres of the cycling segment and the refreshment stations, as established by the regulations.

Less drafting than in 2024: the fact that changes everything

According to the analysis, the time in the illegal zone was a 5% lower in men or with a 11% lower in women compared to the 2024 edition.

This downward trend demonstrates that the commitment to fair competition is serious, and that the simple ability to publish data already changes athletes' behavior.

There were exceptions, however: one triathlete exceeded 22 minutes in an illegal zone, and a top-five triathlete exceeded 5 minutes, figures significantly above the average.

What's next? Live data for the future

Felix Walchshöfer, director of the Roth Challenge, makes it clear: “We don't just want to talk about fairness, we want to make it visible. I'm convinced that this level of transparency was a direct result of the agreement to publish the data.”

From RaceRanger, James Elvery He adds: “Roth’s performance was exemplary. There’s no cleaner way to compete than what we saw at the front of the race.”

The ambition is now even greater: work is being done on the possibility of display data in real time during future broadcasts, thus improving both the viewer experience and the work of the judges.
