Spaniard David Cantero closes 2025 as one of the great revelations of the Triathlon World Series, after his silver medal at the WTCS Final and a season finale that confirms his leap to the international spotlight.

David Cantero: the new threat to world triathlon heading into 2026

The closing of the 2025 season of the Triathlon World Series has left a clear message: David cantero It's no longer a promise.

The Madrid native, Under-23 world champion in 2024, has had an outstanding year that culminated in a historic silver medal at the WTCS Final in Wollongong, her first major medal in the elite category, and with an international victory weeks later at the Florianópolis World Cup.

For an athlete who started the season with the label of "the next big Spanish name", the leap has been even greater: consistency in the top-10, running splits among the best in the world and an end to the season that confirms that his name is already among those who set the pace of the circuit.

A WTCS Final that changes everything

In Wollongong, Cantero completed what he himself defined as his best performance.

Throughout the season, she had been close to the podium, frequently finishing in the top 5 and top 10, but without connecting with the leading group in the swim and bike. In Australia, the race took on a different character.

While a cut ahead, led by matt hauser and reinforced by specialists such as Henry Graff, Alessio Crociani, Csongor Lehmann o Dorian ConinxAs he opened up a gap, Cantero's chasing group worked to minimize the damage. He was clear about it: "With a minute, maybe a minute and a half, we could fight for the podium."

Once on the run, the Spaniard found himself performing at a stellar level. Running alongside Max Studer y Basque VilacaHe admitted that he was surprised by the pace of both of them: “I thought they were going very fast, I tried to hold back and save some energy.” Even so, when the Spanish staff informed him that Miguel Hidalgo He was coming on strong from behind, he made a brave decision: to attack with one and a half laps to go.

The result was one of the images of the year: best run split of the day (28:54), one of the fastest in WTCS history, and a final overtake on Crociani 300 meters from the finish line that secured him the Silver in the Final.

A historic speed

Few runners have broken 29 minutes in recent WTC history, and Cantero achieved it at the most crucial moment of the year. This is no coincidence. His background as a track runner and his Spanish U23 10km record in early 2025 foreshadowed what was to come.

Today, with running as his strongest asset, he has become the benchmark in the third segment. But he knows that in 2026 he will face direct competition from two giants: Alex Yee y Hayden Wilde, absent from a large part of the calendar this year by focusing on athletics and the T100 circuit, respectively.

“It’s going to be very interesting to see us all together. I want to compare myself to them,” he admits.

Goal 2026: to fight for the world podium

The Spaniard is realistic: his profile means that connecting with the leading group on certain circuits isn't always easy. But he also believes that, in the right circumstances, he can be at the front from the start. And if not, he's ready to fight his way back.

When asked how long he thinks he can cut off a leading group to fight for a medal, his answer is clear:
"One minute, maybe a minute and a half, it depends on how each person arrives at the end."

It is a figure that supports his performance not only in Wollongong, but also in his season finale in Brazil.

Florianópolis: a grand finale

After his silver medal in Australia, Cantero ran his last race of the year in Brazil. In Florianópolis, he once again unleashed his main weapon: a running pace that dismantles any breakaway.

After overcoming a gap of almost a minute to a leading trio, he took the victory with authority and closed a cycle of results that would include bronze in Viña del Mar, Silver in San Pedro de La Paz y gold in FlorianópolisA perfect growth progression: 3rd → 2nd → 1st.

Looking ahead to 2026: Spain once again has a podium contender

With Wollongong 2026 as the final and several European events favorable to his profile (Alghero, Hamburg, Karlovy Vary), Cantero is already working with a clear objective: to fully enter the fight for the overall podium of the World Series.

The setting particularly motivates him. Spain has experienced golden eras with Gómez Noya, Mario Mola o Fernando AlarzaAnd now the Madrid native wants to take over: “It will be a very demanding year, but I am prepared to fight.”

If the leading group creates space and the race is wide open at the 10.000-meter mark… the question is no longer whether he can close the gap. The question for the rest is whether they can stay with him.
