The 2nd Granada Geopark Challenge will be held this Sunday, May 24th in Huéscar over a medium distance, with 1.900 meters of swimming, 75,4 kilometers of cycling and 21,3 kilometers of running.
The Granada race reaches its second edition with the aim of establishing itself as one of the most unique events on the Andalusian calendar. The event will be organized by the Huéscar Town Hall along with TriGuadix, with the collaboration of the Provincial Council of Granada and Andalusian Triathlon Federation.
The II Granada Geopark Challenge will count towards the Granada Provincial Triathlon Circuit 2026, an added incentive for a race that wants to make a name for itself through its route, environment and format.
A medium-distance race in the vicinity of the Granada Geopark
The main attraction of the race lies in its connection to the landscape. It won't be a typical middle-distance race. The route connects several of the most recognizable landscapes in the surrounding area. Huescar and the Granada Geoparkwith a proposal that combines nature, toughness and a very marked identity.
The competition will kick off in the San Clemente Reservoir, located in the heart of the Sierra de La SagraThe swimming segment will take place there, with 1.900 meters before the first transition.
Then comes the section that could determine a large part of the race: 75,4 kilometers of cycling along the Geopark's roads. The passage through the Port of La LosaThe section around kilometer 40 will be one of the key points of the day and will require careful management of effort before reaching Huéscar.
The footrace will decide the outcome in Huéscar
The final sector will be contested over 21,3 kilometers of foot race, spread over three laps of just over seven kilometers through the urban environment of Huescar.
The route will pass through some representative areas of the town in Granada and will coincide with the atmosphere of the Saints of Huéscar, which can add an extra boost of excitement in the final kilometers.
On paper, the run will be more favorable than the bike leg, but it will come after a demanding cycling segment. That could be one of the keys: those who have managed to conserve energy will have more room to maneuver and run hard in the final part.
Departure times and participant limit
The organization has set a maximum limit of 200 participants, a figure that maintains the close character of the test and avoids the massive format of other middle-distance events.
La male exit is scheduled 08:00hWhile female exit will take place at 08:15h, both from the San Clemente Reservoir.
A test with its own identity
El II Granada Geopark Challenge It wants to grow from a clear idea: to offer a different middle distance, linked to the environment and with a route that is not limited to fulfilling the distances.
The organization also wanted to enhance the participant experience with details for finishers, such as commemorative t-shirt and vest, in addition to a post-mega-level section featuring typical local products, including the safe lamb.
That connection to the region could be key to the race gaining traction in future editions. In an increasingly crowded calendar, races that manage to differentiate themselves through their setting, treatment of participants, and unique character have more room to grow.
