Tragedy at the 2025 AlpsMan Xtrem: Triathlete dies during the cycling segment

What was supposed to be a celebration of long-distance triathlon turned into a day of mourning in France. During the celebration of the AlpsMan Xtrem Triathlon 2025, a 47-year-old triathlete lost his life after a collision with a heavy vehicle in the town of Aillon-le-Vieux, while competing in the cycling segment.

The organization, deeply affected by the event, made the decision to immediately suspend the tests in progress, both the Xtrem distance and the Half, which were being held around Lac d'Annecy, one of the most spectacular - and harsh - environments in the world calendar European.

Official statement from the organization

Through a message spread on its official channels, the organizing team expressed its regret:

“It is with great sadness that we report the death of a participant during the AlpsMan Xtrem Triathlon on Saturday, June 7, following a collision with a vehicle near Aillon-le-Vieux. Medical services responded quickly, but he could not be revived. The family has been informed and is receiving support during this difficult time.”

In addition, competing athletes were asked to return to the transition park in Saint-Jorioz following the posted signs.

Adverse conditions and safety under debate

Due to weather conditions, the organizers had replaced the usual swimming section (3.8 km) with a 5 km run, a common decision in this type of extreme event when the weather demands it.

Even so, the cycling segment maintained its usual toughness, with more than 4.000 meters of positive elevation gain, along mountain roads that, as is the case in many tests in France, continue partially open to traffic.

This type of format requires participants to comply with the highway code, a requirement that is emphasized in every pre-race briefing. However, despite all precautions, the tragedy occurred, and the exact circumstances of the accident are already being investigated by the French Gendarmerie.

AlpsMan, one of the toughest triathlons in Europe

The AlpsMan Xtrem has established itself in recent years as one of the toughest events on the continent, with a course that pushes every participant to the limit. Starting and finishing in Saint-Jorioz, the triathlon combines mountains, altitude, changing weather, and a level of physical challenge that puts it on par with events like the Embrunman or the Norseman.

In 2025, more than 500 triathletes had registered to compete in one of the two official distances, with participants from all over Europe. The triathlete's death has shocked the entire community, and a statement is expected regarding whether the rest of the weekend's program will go ahead.

The organization has asked for respect and discretion for the family and those close to the deceased triathlete. In the words of the AlpsMan team:

"We count on your solidarity in these difficult times. Today, more than ever, people's safety and lives come before sport."

From Triathlon News we send our deepest condolences to the triathlete's family and friends. RIP.
