New Zealand triathlete Hayden Wilde is making one of the most impressive comebacks in international triathlon in 2025 after his serious accident and is on a historic run in the T100 circuit.
Hayden Wilde: from the hospital in Tokyo to the summit of the T100 in just 98 days
Episode seven of Dare to Dream 2: The Next MovePublished by World Triathlon, it delves into the recent history of Hayden Wilde, double Olympic medalist and current benchmark in middle distance.
The chapter combines never-before-seen images, testimonies from those around him, and the story of a year marked by success, resilience, and an extraordinary recovery.
To provide context, 2025 began brilliantly for Wilde with victories in WTCS Abu Dhabi and in his debut in the Singapore T100, directly joining the group of contracted athletes for the “Hot Shots” project.
But in May, an accident in Yokohama sidelined him: he crashed at high speed into a truck and a car, suffering fractured ribs, a dislocated scapula and a punctured lung that reduced his functional capacity to 60%.
The recovery that seemed impossible
After being stabilized in a Tokyo hospital, he flew to Europe to begin intensive rehabilitation in Austria. Those close to him recall that the pain when breathing was constant and that doctors even warned him of the risk of further surgery. Even so, Wilde maintained a firm resolve: “Never give up.”
In solo 98 daysHe returned to competition in his second T100 of the year, held in London in early August. He didn't just return: won.
That victory kicked off one of the best recent streaks in international triathlon: London, French Riviera, Spain, and Wollongong. Four consecutive wins propelled him to the top of the T100 rankings before the Qatar Final.
The episode “Beyond The Scar”: a personal portrait
The documentary also shows his daily life with his partner, the athlete Hannah Deetsz, with whom he shares training, races and a base of operations in Europe.
The story provides a closer look at the athlete: his motivation after missing out on Olympic gold by just one point, living with a neighbor donkey that wakes them up in the morning, and his obsession with maintaining a meticulous work routine.
The episode's closing delves deeper into its analysis of the victory in T100 WollongongThis was one of his strongest performances, and he faced the challenge of competing the following day in the WTCS Finals. It's a clear example of the physical and mental level he's at in 2025.
A leader on the road to Qatar
Heading into the T100 Final in Qatar (December 11–13), Wilde arrives with the maximum number of points and as the clear favorite for the world title. His season combines results, consistency, and a capacity for suffering rarely seen in middle-distance running.
The complete story of Dare to Dream It not only portrays his resilience after the accident, but also his consolidation as one of the most complete triathletes of the moment.
