Hayden Wilde hospitalized in Japan after a cycling accident

Sunday, May 4th will not be an easy day to forget for Hayden Wilde. Just a few hours after getting a impressive 27:39 in the 10K of the ASICS Tokyo Speed Race, the New Zealand triathlete suffered a hard fall while training in bike.
Wilde himself shared on his social networks that the accident has left him with four broken ribs, fractured scapula, and lung damage.
He is currently hospitalized in Japan, and due to respiratory complications, he will not be able to leave the country for several weeks.
The news has surprised the entire triathlon community. Wilde was on a roll: a winner in Abu Dhabi and Singapore, had started 2025 with stellar performances. His form was impeccable and his schedule ambitious.
Although there's still no official timeframe for his return, his entourage has urged calm. He himself has assured them that he will keep them updated, and has sounded optimistic despite the seriousness of his condition: "Quite discouraged after such a good day yesterday, but I'm surrounded by good people."
With victories in Abu Dhabi and the Singapore T100, and after his last performance in Tokyo, Wilde was going to be one of the big stars of the 2025 season.
As of today, there is no concrete estimate of how long he will be away from competition.
