The new official video of HOMBRE DE HIERRO“History of IRONMAN World Championship”— invites us to look back to understand why this race is much more than a competition.

Since its origins in 1978 on the beaches of Waikiki, the IRONMAN World Championship has become the greatest symbol of endurance, achievement, and determination in modern sport.

"What does this race mean?" asks the narration at the beginning. The answer, as the organization itself points out, is as varied as the thousands of athletes who each year dream of hearing the words "You are an IRONMAN."

From Waikiki to Kona: Where a legend was born

It all started with a simple idea: to combine three iconic Hawaii events—the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the Around-Oahu Bike Race, and the Honolulu Marathon—into a single challenge.

El February 18th 1978, John and Judy Collins They gathered 15 brave souls to swim 3,8 km, cycle 180 km and run 42,2 km. Gordon Haller, a taxi driver and amateur triathlete, won with 11h46'58” and gave rise to a legend.

Shortly after, the event moved to Kailua Kona, on the Big Island, where the heat, wind, and humidity turned the challenge into an almost spiritual test. Since then, Kona has become the long-distance triathlon sanctuary.

Here you can see some photos of its origin

Moments that marked history

The evolution of IRONMAN is filled with images that changed the perception of the sport:

  • Julie Moss (1982): his collapse and drag to the finish line symbolized the essence of the motto “Anything is Possible”.
  • The Iron War (1989): the epic battle between Dave Scott y Mark Allen, resolved by just 58 seconds, raised the competitive level of world triathlon.
  • Rick and Dick Hoyt, father and son, showed that there are no limits when love and will combine on the asphalt.
  • In the 90s and 2000s, figures such as Paula Newby-Fraser (8 titles) and Chrissie Wellington (4 wins) consolidated the golden era of women.
  • Later, Jan Frodeno, Daniela Ryf y Patrick Lange They took physical and mental demands to a new level.

The champions who forged the myth

Since 1978, the IRONMAN World Championship list has reflected the evolution of the sport and the emergence of legends each decade:

The records that redefined the limits

  • En Kona, the men's record belongs to Gustav Iden (NOR) with a total time of 7:40:24 (2022), achieved alongside the best marathon in the island's history: 2h36'15 ", a feat that broke the Polynesian heat barrier.

Kona 2025: A new female chapter

Next October 12’s most emblematic landmarks, the The Women's IRONMAN World Championship will return to Kona., restoring the island's original magic after rotating with Nice in 2023. The best triathletes on the planet will gather there: Lucy Charles-Barclay, Chelsea Sodaro, Anne Haug, Daniela Ryf, Laura Philipp o Marta Sanchez, among others.

Each one will seek to write their own page in the history of triathlon, on the same stage where Julie Moss forever changed the perception of human endeavor.

The official video ends with a phrase that sums up everything this race represents:

"It's just a race. But it's our race."

A reminder that the IRONMAN isn't just a distance: it's a way of understanding life.

The IRONMAN began as an experiment among friends and is now the shared dream of hundreds of thousands of triathletes.

With just one week to go until the 2025 Kona Women's World Championship, this historical review reminds us that, although the names have changed, the spirit remains the same: fight against the heat, the wind and one's own limits to demonstrate that, indeed, “Anything is Possible”.
