Laura Philipp vs. Kat Matthews at IRONMAN Hamburg 2025
On June 1, the German city hosts the European Championships with a star-studded women's lineup.
The next Sunday 1 June, Hamburg will become the epicenter of the women's world triathlon with the dispute of the HOMBRE DE HIERRO European Championship, one of the most anticipated tests of the calendar IRONMAN Pro Series 2025.
The focus will be on the reunion between two giants of long-distance triathlon: the current world champion Laura Philipp and the runner-up Kat matthews.
Philipp vs Matthews: The duel continues
Last September, Philip dazzled at the World Cup in Nice with a final marathon of 2:44:59 which allowed him to beat Matthews by more than eight minutes, crowning himself world champion.
Now, they face off again in Hamburg. Philipp arrives after competing in Kraichgau, and although this is his long-distance debut this season, he has six IRONMAN victories to his name, including Hamburg in 2022.
Matthews, for his part, has already won in 2025 (IRONMAN Texas), and his current form could be decisive. With five IRONMAN wins under his belt, he's looking for revenge.
The British woman achieved her third consecutive victory in Texas, crossing the finish line with a time of 8:10:34, getting a new women's record in a HOMBRE DE HIERRO official, without external aid or special projects like the Sub8.
Other triathletes to watch out for
The American Jackie Hering, champion in Hamburg on last year with a time of 8:19:14 In 2024, he'll be looking to repeat his success. At 40 years old, he continues to perform at the highest level, as evidenced by his recent podium finishes in the 70.3 Oceanside and St. George.
It will also be on the starting line Anne Reichmann, a winner in Cozumel and South Africa this season. The German is having a great year and will want to test her potential against the best.
The line-up is completed by names such as Sara Svensk, second in IRONMAN Barcelona 2024; Stephanie clutterbuck, silver in Chattanooga; Danielle lewis, Els Visser and other triathletes with the level to break into the top five.
Key points for the IRONMAN Pro Series
Hamburg offers 5.000 points to the winner, fundamental in the fight for the 2025 IRONMAN Pro Series title.
Currently, the classification is led by the Spanish Marta Sanchez with 7.030 points. They are followed by Reischmann (6.833), Matthews (5.000), Svensk (4.862), Lewis (4.726) and Hering (4.621).
A strong performance could completely change the ranking landscape.
Will we see a new record?
With so many stars in form and a fast circuit, It is not ruled out that it will go down from 8:18:20 than own Philip signed in Hamburg in 2022. Whatever the outcome, the spectacle is guaranteed.
