Material allowed in triathlon without drafting FETRI 2026

Clear guide to permitted equipment in non-drafting triathlons FETRI 2026: bikeWheels, couplings and key standards for Age Groups.

Non-drafting triathlon is gaining prominence in 2026, and knowing the equipment allowed according to FETRI regulations is key to avoiding penalties and competing safely, especially in Age Groups in Olympic distance.

Equipment permitted in non-drafting triathlons: FETRI regulations explained

With the publication of the FETRI 2026 Regulatory Framework, The non-drafting format is gaining more traction in the calendar national. The change directly affects the Age Groups in Olympic Distanceforcing many triathletes to check their bike and equipment before competing.

Although the current technical regulations are still those of 2025, the rules already specify which events are contested individually. Consequently, the permitted equipment is now governed by the regulations for non-drafting competitions.

Next, we review what is allowed and what is not in non-drafting triathlon under FETRI regulations, focusing on bicycle, wheels, aero bars, helmet and hydration.

The bicycle in a triathlon without drafting

In non-drafting races, the regulations allow for more aerodynamic configurations than in drafting competitions, always within clear limits of safety and dimensions.

This format change is directly linked to the new regulations on drafting in Age Groups, a key point that we analyze in detail in our article on the end of drafting in GGEE according to the FETRI 2026 regulations.

Dimensions and geometry of the frame

The bicycle must maintain a traditional design, although the following are permitted:

  • diamond-shaped frames without a vertical tube,
  • rear triangles that do not insert into the upper part of the vertical tube.

The maximum permitted dimensions are:

  • 185cm length
  • 50 cm wide

This format allows the use of Specific time trial bicycles with UCI TT homologation, common in individual tests.

Saddle position

The regulations are more flexible than in drafting events. The tip of the saddle can be positioned between 5 cm in front y 15 cm from behind of the bottom bracket axle, facilitating more aggressive and aerodynamic positions.

Wheels: when can lenticular wheels be used

Rear wheel

In non-drafting competitions, the use of rear lenticular wheelThe Technical Delegate may prohibit it on the day of the test for safety reasons, such as strong crosswinds.

Front wheel

The lenticular front wheel is prohibited in all categories. It must always be a spoked wheel, and both wheels must have the same diameter.

Handlebars and aerodynamic adapters

The use of couplings makes a clear difference compared to drafting tests:

  • They can extend beyond the line of the brake levers,
  • They cannot extend beyond the leading edge of the wheel,
  • They must be properly capped,
  • It is not mandatory that the bars be joined together,
  • It is permitted to rest your forearms.

Helmet and mandatory uniform

Helmet

It must be rigid, certified and always be buttoned up While the athlete is in contact with the bicycle, devices that interfere with hearing are prohibited.

Trisuit

The torso must be fully covered in the front. In Medium and Long Distance events, it is exceptionally permitted for the diaphragm to be visible in two-piece uniforms. In the Elite category, the zipper may only be on the back.

Hydration and permitted accessories

Regulations limit hydration systems:

  • handlebar or coupling systems: maximum 2 liters,
  • rear supports: maximum two jerrycans of up to 1 liter each.

It is not permitted to carry jerrycans or objects inside the uniform, leg warmers or socks, except for nutrition.

Electronic devices and cameras

The use of mobile phones, radios, or smartwatches is prohibited if they distract the athlete. GoPro-type cameras are only permitted with prior express authorization from FETRI.

Conclusion

The switch to non-drafting triathlon involves more than just a change in strategy. It requires a thorough review of equipment to ensure compliance with regulations and avoid unnecessary penalties.

Knowing which bikes, wheels, aero bars and accessories are allowed according to FETRI regulations is key to competing with peace of mind and focusing solely on performance.

Beyond equipment, the FETRI regulations also introduce significant adjustments to other competitive aspects. You can find out how points are awarded and which events count in our article on How the FETRI ranking works in Age Groups.

Frequently asked questions about equipment in non-drafting triathlon (FETRI)

Can a time trial bike be used in FETRI triathlons?

Yes, in non-drafting tests.

When the format is individual, the FETRI regulations allow the use of specific time trial or time trial bikes, provided they meet dimensions and safety requirements.

Can I use a time trial bike in the 2026 Spanish GGEE Championship?

It depends on the distance.

OLYMPIC DISTANCE (STANDARD):
Yes. In 2026 the Spanish Age Group Championship will be held without drafting, so the use of time trial bikes is permitted.

SPRINT DISTANCE:
No. Drafting is still allowed, so only road bikes without aero bars are permitted.

Can lenticular wheels be used in FETRI triathlon?

It depends on the position.

REAR WHEEL:
Allowed in non-drafting tests, unless prohibited by the Technical Delegate for safety reasons.

FRONT WHEEL:
It is not allowed in any form.

Are aerodynamic devices allowed in non-drafting triathlons?

Yes, provided they do not extend beyond the front edge of the wheel, are properly plugged, and do not pose a risk.

Has the 2026 technical regulation been published yet?

No. The 2025 Competition Regulations remain in force, adapted to the format defined in the FETRI 2026 Regulatory Bases.
