La Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) has announced a strategic investment in Dataworks Technology, a new real-time data analytics company born from its collaboration with the creative agency We Are Sweet.
The goal: to transform the way fans follow races, making triathlon a more accessible, exciting, and understandable spectacle, especially in the middle and long distances.
Live data to narrate the effort
The system developed by Dataworks has already been tested on the circuit T100 Triathlon World Tour, collecting and visualizing data such as heart rate, power o speed risk management.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, it's able to detect key moments—such as overtaking, attacks, or changes in pace—and immediately report them to both commentators and viewers.
According to Mark Bettels, COO of the PTO:
“There are stories that get lost during a race simply because no one sees them at the time. With Dataworks, we'll be able to point out and explain these situations so fans can enjoy it even more and new viewers can better understand what's happening.”
More than numbers: emotion and context
The case of the female career in the Singapore T100 2024 is a perfect example. While lucy buckingham He was leading with 98% of his heart capacity, Lucy Charles-Barclay cut the distance with a much more efficient effort (86%).
The prediction of the overtaking was not only accurate, but it added a narrative tension to the broadcast that until now had only been hinted at.
James Haigh, CTO of Dataworks, highlights the project's ambition:
“We've been testing this technology for two seasons, and the PTO's support will allow us to scale the platform and bring this type of sports storytelling to many more sports, not just triathlon.”
A new era for fans
This technology can now be followed through the Live Data Dashboard en t100triathlon.com/live, where users can consult advanced information such as penalties, segment times, positions won, cardiac output, among others.
The goal is to turn this tool into an essential second screen during broadcasts.
Beyond triathlon: the future of live sport
The agreement includes a PTO equity stake in Dataworks, cementing a relationship of co-innovation.
In the long term, the vision is that this technology will also be applied in team sports, eSports, motorsports or even precision games such as darts or snooker.
