Ronan Nunes Cordeiro, disqualified from Paris 2024 for doping
Brazilian para-triathlete Ronan Nunes Cordeiro has been disqualified from the men's PTS5 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games following an anti-doping rule violation detected by the International Paralympic Committee, which has already referred the case to World Triathlon to decide whether to impose further consequences, including a possible suspension.
The case now opens a new phase in international Paralympic triathlon. International Paralympic Committee (IPC), responsible for the anti-doping program during the Paris 2024 Games, has confirmed that the file of Ronan Nunes Cordeiro passes into the hands of World triathlon, which will be the federation in charge of determining if there are any further sanctions applicable to the Brazilian athlete beyond the annulment of his results at the Paralympic Games.
A positive test detected during the Paris 2024 competition
According to information released by the IPC, the infraction stems from a urine sample collected in competition el 2th September 2024, coinciding with the men's competition PTS5 of para triathlon at the Paralympic Games.
The substance detected was 19-norandrosterone, included in the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances within the category of anabolic androgenic steroids, prohibited at all times.
The athlete initially denied the charge and requested a hearing, but the IPC's independent tribunal ultimately upheld the violation. As a direct consequence, Cordeiro's results at the Paris 2024 Games are annulled, resulting in the loss of his ranking, points, and any associated prize money.
World Triathlon already reflects in the athlete's official profile a DSQ in the Paralympic test on September 2, 2024, a sign that the disqualification of the result has already been incorporated into his competitive records.
What could happen now with the Brazilian?
The remaining issue is the most important in the medium term. Once the CPI procedure regarding Paris 2024 is finalized, it will be World triathlon who must decide whether the case involves a period of ineligibility and other possible consequences within the disciplinary framework of international triathlon.
For now, the World Triathlon anti-doping sanctions and violations page does not yet show a specific final resolution for this case, indicating that the federation process is still open or pending public update.
This distinction is relevant because it differentiates between the sanction applied to the specific result of the Games and a possible suspension that affects the athlete's future competitive status in international para-triathlon events.
A case with a direct impact on the Paralympic podium
The importance of the news goes beyond the disciplinary proceedings. Cordeiro had finished second in the men's final PTS5 of Paris 2024, behind the American Chris Hammer and ahead of the German Martin Schulz, as it still appears in part of the general archive of Paralympic results, which is not always updated at the same rate as the federation or disciplinary records.
This means that the case directly affects one of the medals in the Games' para-triathlon program, in a particularly competitive category with well-known names within the international circuit.
World Triathlon faces a key decision
In this context, World Triathlon's decision will mark the next chapter in the case. The international federation must now rule on one of the most sensitive cases in recent paratriathlon history due to its direct connection to a Paralympic medal.
Pending that resolution, the only thing confirmed to date is that Ronan Nunes Cordeiro has officially lost his Paris 2024 result and that the case is already in the hands of World triathlon, the body that will have to decide whether the infraction also results in a sports suspension for the Brazilian athlete.
