World Triathlon has approved the Olympic qualification system for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, which introduces more places for emerging countries and reinforces the weight of the mixed relay in accessing the 110 Olympic places.
World Triathlon has confirmed that the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has given the green light to triathlon classification system in the Olympics from LA28, maintaining the general structure of previous cycles but with relevant changes in the distribution of places and access routes.

The qualifying period will open on May 18th 2026 and it will close May 18th 2028.
More weight for the mixed relay in the Olympic qualification
El mixed relay It is once again one of the pillars of the LA28 qualification system. A significant portion of the available places will be allocated through this route, reinforcing the role of team competitions within the Olympic cycle.
The United States, as the host country, will be guaranteed a full mixed relay team (two men and two women), provided it has eligible athletes.
In addition, Mixed Relay World Championships 2026 and 2027 They will automatically award four places (2 men and 2 women) to the winning federations.
The World Triathlon mixed relay Olympic ranking will also be decisive, distributing places among the best national teams, with a system that prioritizes continental representation when there are no countries already qualified.
In total, 22 of the 55 places by gender They will be allocated through the channels linked to the mixed relay and the host country.
The system approved for LA28 maintains the general structure of the previous Olympic cycle, but introduces adjustments that limit the accumulation of places by the major powers and strengthen the presence of new countries on the starting line. With the start of the qualification period in May 2026, federations and triathletes now have a stable framework within which to plan their journey to Los Angeles.
Individual classification and Olympic ranking
La individual classification will continue to be based on Olympic Qualification World Triathlon Ranking, which will assign 21 places per gender at the close of the qualifying period in May 2028.
Federations that have already secured full quotas through the mixed relay or as host countries will not be able to use their two highest-ranked individual athletes to expand that quota, thus limiting the accumulation of places by major powers.
This system maintains the balance between individual performance and team strategy, one of the hallmarks of the current Olympic model of triathlon.
Historic expansion of the “New Flag” road
One of the main new features of the LA28 cycle is the expansion of the “New Flag” road, designed to guarantee the presence of countries that have not managed to qualify through traditional methods.
For the first time, reservations will be made two places per continent through this route, one by means of the Continental Games and another through the World Triathlon world ranking.
In practice, this will allow up to 10 additional athletes (Men and women) from emerging countries have a direct route to reach the Olympic Games.
World Triathlon views this change as a structural adjustment that seeks to broaden the geographical diversity of Olympic triathlon without increasing the total number of participants.
Eligibility rules and limits by country
To be eligible, triathletes must have been born before December 31 of 2010, maintain the same national federation throughout the qualifying period and be included within the top 160 in the world ranking on the closing date.
The federations with at least three athletes in the top 30 they will be able to qualify up to three athletes per genderwhile the rest of the countries will be limited to two male places and two female places.
A system that continues the same, but with greater global openness
The system approved for LA28 maintains the basis of previous cycles, but introduces clear adjustments for to promote global representation and strengthen the role of mixed relay as a strategic discipline within the Olympic program.
With the qualifying window set to open in 2026, the road to Los Angeles is already defined, and will shape the sports planning of federations and triathletes for the next two years.
