Istanbul hands over the baton and Tarragona is already looking ahead to the 2026 European Championship.
The European Triathlon Championships concluded this weekend in Istanbul, an edition that brought together elite athletes and thousands of amateur athletes.
The icing on the cake came with a symbolic gesture: the Turkish Federation and the local organizing committee handed over the baton to the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI) already the city of Tarragona, which will host the event in 2026.
Tarragona, the next European triathlon capital
Although the designation of Tarragona as the host city was already known, the handover officially marks the beginning of the journey toward June 2026.
El Port of Tarragona It will be the epicenter of the competition, with routes that are already being developed and that will blend the Mediterranean with the urban essence of the city.
An inclusive European Championship: elite, age groups and paratriathlon
The program will be complete: elite tests, races for age groups in sprint and standard distances, as well as paratriathlon. In this way, the event aims to become a true multi-sport celebration with thousands of participants from all over Europe.
The legacy of Istanbul
The 2025 edition in Türkiye was an organizational success thanks to the joint efforts of the federation, the city, and volunteers. Now, the responsibility shifts to Spain, with the challenge of matching—and surpassing—the experience in Istanbul.
Expectation on the Catalan coast
For FETRI and Tarragona, this represents a unique opportunity to showcase the organizational capacity of Spanish triathlon and consolidate the city as an international sporting benchmark.
With its experience in major events, the capital of Tarragona has already begun warming up for a highly anticipated event.
