World Triathlon launches the Age-Group Rankings

The World Triathlon Age-Group Rankings is the new official ranking system that will order age-group triathletes according to their results in World Championships and Continental Championships.

World Triathlon has presented the Age-Group Rankings, a structure that for the first time will provide international continuity to the performance of the amateur triathlete.

Until now, the goal was a specific World Championship or a particular podium finish. With this system, the results become part of a... cumulative global ranking.

The federation already applied this model in the elite category. Now it is extending it to the Age-Group universe, which is the true foundation of international triathlon.

How the points system works

The ranking is based on a fixed allocation of points according to the event category. The higher the competition, the higher the score.

In the international reference system:

– World Championship Final: 1.250 points to the winner
- Olympics: 1.000 points
– World Triathlon Championship Series: 1.000 points
– World Triathlon Cup: 500 points
– Continental Championships: 400 points
– Continental Cups: 250 points

El Age-Group ranking It will follow this same hierarchical logic. The difference between positions is progressive: the points decrease one by one. 7,5% for each position with respect to the winner. This creates a clear mathematical scale between each result.

Adjustments by distance and format

Not all tests are worth the same. The system applies corrections depending on the type of competition:

– Sprint tests award the 75% of the value of the standard distance.
– The semi-final/final or eliminator formats award the 87,5%.

The goal is to balance the competitive weight between formats without distorting the hierarchy of events.

Only 12 results count

The ranking doesn't simply reward competing more. Only a maximum of [number of] are counted. 12 tests:

– 6 results from the last year (full value)
– 6 results from the previous year (value reduced to one third)

This requires maintaining recent consistency and prevents the ranking from being based solely on the volume of shares.

The continental factor

In Continental Championships and Cups, the following comes into play: Quality of Field Factor, a coefficient that adjusts the points according to the average level of the continent.

The continent with the highest density of athletes in the world's Top 400 can receive up to a 20% extra on Continental Cups or with a 30% off Continental Championships, with proportional adjustments for the rest.

In this way, not all continentals score the same if the competitive level is different.

What changes for the Age-Group triathlete

The Age-Group Rankings do not replace medals or modify World Championship qualification. What they introduce is a continuous international reference.

It allows you to compare seasons, measure progress, and build a trajectory within a global ranking.

In a calendar 2026 with venues such as Pontevedra, Zofingen, Abu Dhabi or DohaThe new ranking adds another competitive layer to amateur triathlon.

The age group has always been the heart of triathlon. Now it will also have a classification that reflects that.
