XTERRA turns 30 and opens the 2026 season in South Africa
The XTERRA circuit celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026 and kicks off the new XTERRA World Tour season this weekend in South Africa, consolidated as the world's leading cross triathlon event.
XTERRA is the international off-road triathlon circuit that combines open water swimming, mountain biking, and trail running. Founded in 1996, three decades later it has become the global benchmark for cross triathlon, with events on several continents and its own World Championship.
The 2026 season begins from February 28 to March 1 in the Elgin Valley, South Africa, the historic home of the calendar and one of the most established events on the circuit.
30 years of the world benchmark in cross triathlon
Since its inception, XTERRA has forged its own identity within the triathlon world. In contrast to the traditional road format, the circuit opted for technical courses, natural environments, and a focus more closely linked to mountain biking and trail running.
Over these three decades, some of the biggest names in cross triathlon have competed in its events. Among them, the South African stands out. Conrad “The Caveman” Stoltz, four-time XTERRA world champion and one of the historical figures of the circuit, closely linked to the South African event that opens this year's calendar.
The circuit's growth has been progressive, with international expansion and a qualifying system that culminates each season in the XTERRA World Championship, which will be held again in 2026 in Ruidoso (New Mexico, United States).
The XTERRA World Tour 2026 kicks off
The South African race officially kicks off the 2026 XTERRA World Tour. The program includes the full distance race on Saturday and youth competitions on Sunday as part of the XTERRA Youth Tour, in addition to trail running and duathlon events throughout the weekend.
Beyond the symbolism of the anniversary, the South African event marks the start of the World Championship qualification process. Results from the World Tour events will determine who qualifies for the Ruidoso race.
The circuit maintains its overall structure, combining professional categories and age groups, and reinforcing its position as a consolidated alternative within the international triathlon calendar.
A circuit that has defined off-road triathlon
Thirty years after its inception, XTERRA continues to represent the more natural and technical side of triathlon. In a landscape dominated by major long- and middle-distance road triathlon franchises, the off-road circuit maintains a distinct identity and a loyal community.
The 2026 season not only opens a new competitive calendar. It also symbolizes the maturity of a format that has managed to maintain itself and grow for three decades within the international triathlon scene.
