The distance of the drafting zone is once again generating debate in international triathlon after a survey shows majority support for 20 meters versus the current 12m model.

The distance of the drafting zone is back at the center of debate in international triathlon.

A survey conducted by the media Professional Triathlon News (ProTriNews) reveals that a large majority of triathletes are opting to extend the distance to 20 metersa measure already implemented by circuits such as T100 o Challenge Family, but no HOMBRE DE HIERRO, which maintains the 12 meters.

The data is conclusive: 85,7% of respondents They are in favor of competing with a wider drafting zone, compared to 9% who defend the current model and a small percentage who ask for more studies before deciding.

A survey featuring voices from the professional peloton

The ProTriNews survey included 1.344 participants, among professional triathletes (active and retired), coaches, industry members and fans.

For the first time, the focus of the debate shifts from offices, podcasts, or theoretical analyses to those who actually compete under these rules.

Among the women of Top 100 of the IRONMAN Pro SeriesThe support at 20 meters reaches 83%with prominent names from the international scene. In the male case, support drops slightly, but remains in the majority, with a 74% in favor of change.

Experience outweighs theory

One of the most revealing pieces of data comes from those who have competed under both sets of regulations. Among the triathletes who have already competed in races with drafting zone 20 meters away, support rises to 91,8%, based on his direct experience in racing.

Furthermore, among those who have competed over a distance of 12 meters, Over 77% recognize that there is a clear competitive advantagewhile only a residual percentage consider that it does not provide real aerodynamic benefits.

The interpretation is clear: even admitting that 12 meters can offer advantages, many triathletes prefer a scenario that reduces that influence and makes it more difficult to benefit from the slipstream.

A sport that has changed… but not its rules

The debate didn't arise out of nowhere. Modern triathlon is evolving... much higher speeds than two decades ago, with clear advances in aerodynamics, materials, pacing strategies and group dynamics.

The biggest leaps in performance in long-distance events have occurred precisely in the cycling segment.

However, the regulations on drafting distance have remained virtually unchanged, generating a growing sense of mismatch between the rules and competitive reality.

So now what?

With T100 and Challenge Family With the 20-meter rule already in place, the big question is whether HOMBRE DE HIERRO Will it take the step in the future or will it continue to defend the current model for logistical and race control reasons?

The survey does not aim to impose an immediate solution, but it does introduce an element that has been absent from the debate until now: the majority opinion of the athletes themselves.

Triathlon is evolving. The question is whether its rules will keep pace.
