Melilla experienced a weekend of top-level triathlon with the European Mixed Relay Sprint Championship.
After the individual tests on Saturday, this Sunday it was the turn of the team competitions, which crowned Italy in the elite category already France in the junior category.
Italy dominates the elite and leaves Spain out of the Top 10
In the elite event, the Italian team won comfortably, ahead of the Netherlands and Hungary. The Spanish team, made up of Maria Casals, Stephen Basanta, Alejandra Segui e Izan Edo He crossed the finish line in 11th position, with a time 2 minutes and 44 seconds slower than the winners.
Despite our efforts, it wasn't enough to stay close to the podium in a highly explosive race from the first relay. The national team continues to gain experience in this format, which will be key for Paris 2028.
France takes an exciting junior relay
In the junior category, France took the win, beating Germany in a spectacular final relay.
The United Kingdom completed the podium. Spain, with a quartet consisting of Cristina Jiménez-Orta, Damian Suarez, Sarah Moreno y Hector Tolsá, had a good performance that placed them in 6th place on the continent.
This result reaffirms the potential of young Spanish triathletes and the importance of continuing to invest in grassroots talent, especially in the mixed relay, an Olympic event that is increasingly strategic in major championships.
The Plaza de las Culturas, epicenter of the continental triathlon
With the Plaza de las Culturas as its central stage, the event enjoyed impeccable organization and a notable turnout of local and visiting spectators. The atmosphere, institutional involvement, and commitment to the sport were key to consolidating Melilla as one of the major European triathlon venues.
Melilla is already thinking about the European Youth Festival 2026
The final touch came with an important announcement: in 2026, Melilla will once again be an international protagonist by hosting the European Youth Festival Championship, an event aimed at the future stars of triathlon.
For several days, athletes from all over Europe will participate in an experience that combines competition, training, and culture, reinforcing the city's position as a benchmark for grassroots sports internationally.
