This time, the victory went to the Americans. Jackie Hering y Matthew Marquardt, who took home the maximum 5.000 ranking points and a prize of $18.000 each.
For Marquardt, it was his first professional victory in the IRONMAN distance, also becoming the first non-Oceanic man to win this event in its 14 years of history.
For her part, Hering has had a brilliant career that has placed her squarely in the fight for the women's world ranking.
Hering comes from behind to secure Kona spot
Jackie Hering arrived in Cairns with doubts after failing to finish the IRONMAN in Hamburg just two weeks earlier. But this time, everything went perfectly: she came back from fifth place after the rain, maintained her pace in the cycling segment, and dominated the marathon to cross the finish line in 8:42:15, four minutes ahead of New Zealander Hannah Berry.
The women's podium was completed by Lotte Wilms, who led much of the cycling but lost crucial time at the start of the marathon. The race also marked a milestone: for the first time, there was no Australian on the professional women's podium in Cairns.
Marquardt makes history
In the men's category, Matthew Marquardt put in a memorable performance. He suffered severe cramps upon exiting the water and dropped to 16th place in the opening kilometers of the race. But he recovered to enter the fray alongside locals Nick Thompson and Ben Hill.
In the marathon, Thompson seemed to be in control, with a lead of more than four minutes. But the American gradually closed the gap until he took the lead with 10 kilometers to go, crossing the finish line in 7:50:41, one of the fastest times recorded in Australia.
