Next Saturday, October 4, Rome will become the epicenter of international triathlon with a new edition of the World Cup.
Just a few kilometers from the Coliseum, the best triathletes of the moment will compete in a test of sprint distance with the start at Laghetto dell'EUR: a 750-metre swim, a 20-kilometre cycle divided into five laps, and a 5-kilometre run in two fast laps.
The event will be broadcast live on Triathlon Live, with the women's race starting at 9:30 h (CEST) and the male to the 11:30 h (CEST).
Italy bets big at home
The big drop will be Bianca Seregni, medalist WTCS, who dropped from the list at the last minute. Even so, the home team is showing up with a top-notch squad.
The first seed is Verena Steinhauser, who arrives after finishing 15th in Karlovy Vary and 12th in Weihai, as well as coming close to the podium in Saidia with a 4th place.
Another of the great assets will be Ilaria Zane, a regular at the top of the World Cup rankings. This year she took a bronze in Saidia and finished 4th in Samarkand, confirming her consistency. Joining them will be costanza arpinelli, which in Samarkand was hung a historic bronze, and Beatrice Mallozzi, 4th in Huatulco and with a chance to surprise at home.
International weight rivals
The list of international candidates is extensive. The Swiss cathia schär returns to the Roman stage after having won bronze here in 2023. The New Zealander Nicole Van Der Kaay, champion of Oceania and with several top-10 finishes in WTCS, will be another of the favorites.
From France they arrive Sandra Dodet, multiple World Cup medalist, and Mathilde Gautier, known for her aggressiveness on the bike. The name of the American also appears Danielle Orie, who debuted on the podium in Saidia and will be looking to repeat his sensations.
Among the young women who want to make a splash, the Germans stand out. Franka Rust (bronze in the European Sprint and 13th in WTCS) and Selina Klamt, U23 world champion in 2023. France will also field the debutant Manon Laporte, a medalist in junior categories and now ready to compete with the absolute elite.
The Spanish in Rome
In the women's event we will have two national representatives: Sara Guerrero y Marta PintanelGuerrero arrives on the back of a remarkable summer, where she secured a bronze medal and a top-five finish at World Cups. Pintanel, meanwhile, won her first international gold medal in Africa and earned a valuable eighth-place finish at the European Championships in Istanbul. Both arrive motivated and with a real chance of being in contention for the top 10.
There will be five Spaniards in the men's race. Antonio Serrat, number 7, leads the team after an irregular year but still with important results. David Castro will try to put a difficult run behind them, remembering that they already know what it's like to win this year's Napier World Cup.
Sergio Baxter returns after injuries and with the fresh memory of his two podiums in 2024. In addition, the new generation will be represented by Pelayo Gonzalez, 4th in the Holten European Cup, and Izan Edo, one of the absolute revelations of 2025.
The foreign threat in the men's category
The great rival to beat will be the French Navy, with Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger (champion in Samarkand), Nathan Grayel and the defending champion in Rome, Yanis Seguín. They will also be Vetle Thorn (NOR), Sebastian wernersen (NOR), Lasse Priester (GER) or Greek Panagiotis Bitados, all of them with the potential to break the race in the cycling segment.
The Italian public will also have their eyes on Euan De Nigro, one of the young local talents. For Spain, the ambition will be to battle it out on the bike and ride hard on a course that's often decided in the final meters.
