Preview of the 2025 Melilla Sprint Triathlon European Championships

This Saturday and Sunday 19 & 20 of July, the autonomous city of Melilla will host the European Sprint Triathlon Championship, a key quote from the calendar international that will bring together the cream of the continental triathlon.

The event will feature tests in categories Elite, U23, Junior y Mixed Relay, turning the Galapagos Inlet into the nerve center of this great sporting spectacle.

La Spanish Triathlon Selection, headed by Iñaki Arenal, is already in the city with the clear intention of fight for medals in all categories, especially in the U23 and Junior events, where the national team is expected to play a leading role.

Two men in the elite: Alberto González and Genis Grau

Spain will have only two male representatives in the elite category, but at a high level: Alberto González y Genis Grau.

The Malaga native arrives as one of the most solid triathletes on the national scene, while Genis, recent Spanish champion in the Olympic distance, has earned his place with consistent performances.

Both will have to compete against a very competitive pack where the Italian stands out. Alessio Crociani, third last weekend in the WTCS from Hamburg, along with other names such as Schachar Sagiv, Nicola Azzano, James Edgar, Bence Bicsak o Max Studer.

No Spanish women in the elite women's event

The great absence will be that of the Galician Sara Guerrero, withdrew at the last minute, leaving Spain without female representation in the elite event.

Instead, the spotlight will be on a high-level international grid, with favorites such as jolien vermeylen, Tanja Neubert, Jessica Fullagar, Mathilde Gautier or the Italian ones Bianca Seregni, Ilaria Zane, Beatrice Malloci y costanza arpinelli.

U23 and Junior: where our best options are

It is in the categories U23 and Junior where Spain presents its best assets. In the U23 women's event, the following stand out: María Teresa Jiménez-Orta, Alejandra Segui y Maria Casals, while among men they will compete Izan Edo y Stephen Basanta, all with international experience and real chances of reaching the podium.

In the Junior category, the Andalusian Cristina Jiménez-Orta, the current Duathlon World Champion, is the favorite for gold. She will be accompanied by Nur Ortega y Sarah MorenoIn the men's event, Hector Tolsa leads a team completed by Damian Suarez y Victor Alias.

The objective: to be in the leading groups

During the pre-match meeting with local media, both the athletes and the coach Iñaki Arenal They have agreed that the Melilla circuit is tough and demanding, with the cycling segment as a tactical key. Being in the breakaway groups will be crucial to fighting for medals.
