Periostitis is a pathology with a high incidence in the triathlete since it mainly affects athletes who practice running, which is why it is popularly known as “runner's disease”.

In this article our collaborator Healthing tells us about its causes and the treatment to cure this typical injury of runners

Is the inflammation of the periosteum, membrane that covers the bones responsible for nourishing and giving sensitivity to them. This pathology usually occurs more frequently in the tibia area and in these cases you can also find involvement of the adjacent musculature: tibial anterior and posterior, flexor digitorum longus and soleus. The inconvenience are usually located in the antero-central face of the shin, they are very intense and focused and reproduce during walking or running.

What is its possible origin?

The factors that can cause inflammation of the periosteum are:

  • Overtraining (increase the workload both in quantity and intensity)
  • Inadequate training surface (too hard ground)
  • Biomechanical alterations of lower limb (pronators, dig foot, knee valgus, etc.)
  • Inappropriate shoes
  • Muscular alterations

How do we treat it?

The first objective is to carry out a individualized valuation in each case, obtaining the main cause of the problem.

The treatment in the initial phases lies in lower the inflammation of the periosteum ytwork the muscles associated with the injury. The application of Game Ready (cold + pressotherapy) is very indicated for these initial cases, complementing with kinesiotape bandages, EPI, neuromodulation, high power laser, vacusport to accelerate recovery and shock waves in the most persistent cases.

Once this irritation has subsided, a muscular rebalancing, a correction in biomechanics of the career and joint work with the podiatry unit when necessary, complete the treatment for a total recovery without risk of relapse.
