Regulation of the FETRI for the use of neoprene in triathlon

We leave this content published by trievent where he explains the FETRI regulation for the use of Neoprene

The triathlon season has already begun in some Autonomous Communities and in others it is about to do so; At this time of the year the temperature of the water in the sea or reservoirs is relatively low, so we must take into account which are the norms that mark the Regulation of the FETRI regarding the use of Neoprene in triathlon competitions.

In this sense the Official Judges of each test must take the water temperature 1 hour before the exit to a depth of 60 cm. in the middle of the route and in two other points of the swimming segment, taking as official the lowest temperature.

Below we detail what are the rules dictated by the Spanish Triathlon Federation and we give you some valuable tips to debut in the water this season.

Water temperature

a) The use of a neoprene suit may be mandatory, permitted or prohibited, depending on the distance (in meters) and water temperature (in ºC) expressed in the following table:

Modifications

  1. Athletes of 50 or more are allowed to participate with the neoprene suit whatever the water temperature.
  2. If there are extreme weather conditions, such as strong winds, rain, etc .; The Technical Delegate and / or the Medical Delegate can decide on the length of the swimming segment and the use of the wetsuit. The final decision will be made 1 hour before the start, and will be clearly communicated to the athletes.
  3. For Acuatlon competitions, if the water temperature is lower than 18ºC, the competition will be modified to the Swimming-Race format, according to the distances included in section 1.5.
  4. The official water temperature will be measured in the middle of the course, and in two other swimming segment points, and at a depth of 60 cm., 1 hour before the start. The lowest temperature taken, will be considered as the official temperature.

Tips

  • Do not release the neoprene on the day of the test. It is convenient to try it during the week before in the same environment in which you are going to compete. The indoor pool can also be a good opportunity to test it. For those who had it saved from previous seasons, it is advisable to wear it days before to recover sensations.

  • For those of us who have already experienced swimming in open waters, we know that the head is very sensitive to low water temperatures and can cause annoying pain during competition. There are neoprene caps that we can put under the hat provided by the organization, which is mandatory.

  • Another complement to avoid the loss of heat will be the "heating oil", very useful to maintain body temperature and facilitate the transition when removing the neoprene.

  • After the competition it is very important to keep the neoprene in good condition by washing it with cold water (for example with a hose or in the shower). Then let it dry in the shade well stretched or on a hanger, never in the sun, as it could spoil it and subtract flexibility. If you cut the neoprene, do not use any glue, there are specific products in specialized stores to repair this type of garments.
