The European triathlon season kicks off on Sunday with the Trolley of Portocolom

1.000 triathletes are cited in a full weekend of activities

This Sunday the twentieth edition of the Portocolom Triathlon, which has been presented at the Club Nàutic de Portocolom and which represents the unofficial start of the triathlon season at European level.

It will be a historic day for this sport nationally, as it will be the 20 anniversary of one of the tests of greater solera and renown of the Spanish calendar. There will be record of participation con 1.000 athletes and a large group of international and local professionals fighting for victory in both formats (111 and 55.5). In addition, on Saturday the TriKids, a duathlon for minors, the largest participation in the Balearic Islands, in which a total of 200 children participate. The Portocolom Triathlon was chosen once again last year as the best triathlon of the Balearic Islands by a vote of the athletes themselves.

The Club Nàutic de Portocolom has once again been the setting for the official presentation of the Portocolom Triathlon that celebrates its 20th anniversary this Sunday from 8:45 am, with the start of race 111 (1 km of swimming, 100 km of cycling and 10 km of running). The event was attended by the Mallorcan athlete Joan Nadal, the Germans Diana Riesler and Markus Hörmann, the Belgian Michael Van Cleven (current winner), as well as the institutional representatives Joan Xamena Galmés, mayor of Felanitx, Pere Cler, councilor d 'Esports, Jaume Montserrat, councilor for Tourism, Llorenç Tortella, delegate of Batlía, Climent Garau, president of the Portocolom Nautical Club, and Jaume Vicens, director of the race.

It will be a weekend of sports activity in Portocolom (Felanitx, Mallorca) with the dispute tomorrow from 11h00 TriKids, a duathlon for minors in which 200 children will participate, the fair of the athlete in the Club Nautic and the ceremony of awards and party post event on Sunday.

The reign of the day will be the Triathlon of Portocolom 111 that will start on Sunday at 8h45 and consists of 1 km of swimming, 100 km of cycling and 10 km of foot race. From the 11h the race is also played under the 55.5 format, with more affordable distances (500 m of swimming, 50 of cycling and 5 of running) and that is perfect to debut in the world of triathlon.

There will be special prizes for the fastest riders in the Sant Salvador cycling segment, one of the great attractions of the event, and a special Heliocare prize for the winners.

As for the list of professionals who will fight for the victory, the locals stand out Carlos López o Joan Nadal, that will be the faces with part of the very powerful Pewag Racing team, with the Belgian Michael Van Cleeven to the head, winner of the last two editions, and accompanied by Thomas Steger, third in the Ironman Mallorca 70.3 2016 or Stefan Schmid, winner of Ironman Cozumel in 2015 and third in Nice in 2016. In addition, it is expected the return of a regular in the podiums, Fabian Rhan, and Timothy Van Houtem, second in the tough triathlon of Alpe D'Uez in 2016 and that is usually always in the top-5 in goal in the Yacht Club of Portocolom.

In females, the main favorites are Jenny Schulz, European champion of Duathlon in 2015, and Leonor Font, first in the Spanish Long Distance Cup last year and that in the race on foot can give the surprise. The Austrian Lisi Gruber, 2ª in the Ironman Barcelona 2016 and a formidable competitor, has just confirmed its presence at the starting line.

In the 55.5 format  Lucas Mola, brother of the triathlete Mario Mola, defend the title. It will have the competition of Thomas Kaiser, second in 2016 and who returns to Portocolom with the spirit of revenge, along with another classic of our asphalt like the Polish Kacper Adam. Another winner of the 111 in Portocolom, the German Marküs Hörmann, returns with great enthusiasm after a long injury last season, and has decided to take the 55.5 start because he is recovering from the flu, like his compatriot Diana Riesler, who after a feverish process he has preferred to compete in the 55.5 and is postulated as a great favorite to victory in the short format
