Michaell Weiss breaks the clock at the Ironman in Cozumel. Clemente Alonso 3º

Crushing victory for Michael Weiss at IROMAN in Cozumel where he managed to revalidate his victory with a 17-minute lead, getting into the finish line with a final time of 8:12:14 setting the new race record. Olympic Champion Nicola Spirig achieves victory in women in her debut at this distance

 

 

More than 2.500 triathletes took the start this afternoon (Spanish time) to face the 3,8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling and 42 km of running.

From the beginning the Spaniards were in the top positions where Peru Alfaro (00: 44: 23) managed to get the first of the water followed by Clemente Alonso and the North American Matt Chabrot. Michael Weiss Complete the 3,8 km of swimming to more than 6 minutes of the head next to Gustavo Rodriguez, while Victor del Corral completed the sector in 54 'coming out with more than 26' of water disadvantage

Already on the cycling sector, the American Weiss, imposed a strong pace, reached the head of the race on the 5 Km, getting to finish the 180 km of cycling with more than 11 minutes of advantage about the Austrian Georg Swoboda. Matt Chabrot and Clemente Alonso reached more than 22 minutes together. On the other hand, Víctor del Corral made a spectacular comeback, reaching eighth position with 26 'behind. Peru Alfaro entered T2 3 minutes later.

 

On the race on foot the American knew how to keep the difference from the beginning to the end where besides getting the victory for the second consecutive year he has managed to set the circuit record.

The second position was very disputed by  Matt Chabrot  and Clemente Alonso until the Spaniard reached him after the half marathon, until he finally managed to enter second position (8:29:50) followed by Clemente Alonso (8: 3017) who suffered some cramps on the last lap that made him finish third, 27 seconds behind the American. Clemente is showing his great form after having managed just 15 days ago to finish second in the IRONMAN of Arizona. 

The performance of the rest of Spaniards was headed by Víctor del Corral As we are used to in cycling and running, making a spectacular comeback, passing at km 30 in sixth position, until at km 35 he slowed down until the end of the test in eleventh position with a final time of 9: 00:20

 

Gustavo Rodríguez he did not have a good performance, since from km 150 he started to feel bad, but finally he was able to finish the race finishing in 17ª position (9: 23: 26). Peru Alfaro that after a great performance during the whole race he retired in the 30 km of running

In the female category, the Olympic Champion Nicola Spirig that debuted in this distance got the victory with a final time of 9: 14: 07 followed by Michelle Versterby (9: 17: 30) and of Kelly Williamson (9: 24: 41)

The test was very similar from the beginning, where Versterby was in the lead but was not decided until the km 21 where Spirig reached it and was placed with 1: 38 at the 28 km of race, from there he was managing his advantage until to reach the goal demonstrating its power also in this distncia ..

In Age Groups we must highlight the great performance of Mabel Gallardo who finished second in his age group (35-39) with a final time of 10: 34: 57 and Ignacio Herrero Martín that I finish the test in 3º position of its age group (18-24)
