Statement by Jose Maria Merchán on his accusation of possible doping

From Triathlon News we want to echo the statement that has made us arrive Jose Maria Merchán in reference to the article recently published in El Pais, where they say that they have found a file from the year 2003 relating to the plot of the Jimbo operation.

This is the full statement

"I want to clarify and explain the accusations that a newspaper has launched against me. Above all, highlight the last paragraph of the same accusation where it concludes "... the police do not have recordings or evidence either ..."

I do not know the reason, nor do I want to know, although I imagine the background from which I will not enter. I feel helpless, but what I do know is that I feel obliged to write these words for all those people who have shown me their support. And for that minority that without reason and without contrasting information accuse, and that of course against these last ones, my lawyer has already acted because that is a verifiable crime.

Never in my life have I committed any type of doping and I have always complied with the established norms. I have been and will continue to be an advocate of sport without shortcuts, and all the people who know me know as much as I think.

I have fought for triathlon since I was 15 years old and I will continue to do so, always from humility and work fighting for the interests of athletes and sometimes facing great walls that made that path difficult.

I take advantage of these lines to convey to you that I will continue to fight and express my commitment to all those athletes who, after finishing their sporting career, pass into oblivion.

I would like to thank again all those who support me and my family. They know that I will never give up and continue to fight for what I believe is fair."
