Mavi Garcia silver medal in the Duathlon European Championship of Soria

The Balearic duath has achieved the silver medal in a tough race, the gold has been for the French Sandra Levenez and the bronze for the French Lucie Picard.

This afternoon has been played in the city of Soria a new edition of the Duathlon European Championship, under bad weather conditions of cold (9º degrees) and dangerous soil due to falling rain. The distances of the race were standard, that is, 10km of running, 40km of cycling and 5km of running.

The competition started on time 15: 15 and from the first strides the French Sandra Levenez imposed a strong pace, passed the 2 km leading a group of 13 with Mavi Garcia, Sandrina Illes, Sonia Bejarano, Sara Bonilla, Davinia Albinyana... and they closed this group Maria Varo y Noelia Juan. At kilometer 5 the group had been reduced to three units, the Frenchwoman continued pulling with Mavi and Sandrina close to her and behind her a rosary of runners separated by a few seconds. At km 7 Mavi lost steam and dropped 15” with the leading duo. At this kilometer point Bejarano, Bonilla and Albinayna passed in 5th, 6th and 7th place respectively. The last two kilometers of the first sector were going to be a recital for Levenez, who reached T1 alone, with an 11" lead over Illes and 1' over Mavi and the French Ricard. Very close to Mavi, only 15” away, came a quartet with , and the rest of the Spanish women were lagging behind.

In the cycling sector, the leader Sandra Levenez continued with her dominance and the rest of the pursuers further increased the advantage. From behind Mavi García broke the group and went alone in search of the silver medal. At km 20 the situation of the race was Levenez leading, Mavi García 1′ behind her and after the Balearic Islander a quartet with Michelle Flipo, Sandrina Illes, Julie Chuberra and Lucie Picard circulated at 30”. At some distance came Sonia Bejarano alone and behind her passed a small group with Maria Varo, Sara Bonilla, Davinia Albinyana and Noelia Juan.

 The 40 km of cycling left the gold and silver medal sentenced. Levenez marked the best cycling partial and got off the bike with a 1'32” advantage over Mavi Garcia. The Spaniard had a 1'36” lead in T2 over her Ferrer Hotels teammate Michelle Flipo. After the Franco-Mexican, a quartet of 2” duathletes arrived at T30.

Finally in the 5km of foot race Sandra Levenz was dedicated to administer the advantage and was made with the gold medal. For its part Mavi Garcia towards the own in competition, holding his persecutors at a distance and took the silver medal, despite a signaling error at the entrance to the finish line. The third position in goal was for the French Lucie Picard which also became the European champion sub23.
