Carmen Gómez, Olympic subchampion in Mixed Relay teams at the Olympic Games. of the Youth of Nanjing

The Spanish representatives have ended their adventure in the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.

 

 

Carmen Gómez Cortés this August 21 has been proclaimed Olympic runner-up in Nanjing, after completing a sensational post in his mixed relay team in China. For its part, the team Alberto González reached an outstanding fifth place.

 

On this occasion the teams of the mixed relay they were trained by triathletes from different countries, representing their continents, counting in several cases with more than one team per continent.

 

The teams, consisting of two boys and two girls, have been formed using the rankings obtained in the individual competitions of the past 17 and 18 of August. A) Yes, Alberto González (sixth and Olympic diploma last Monday) participated in the second relay of the Europa 2 team, together with the Russian Elizaveta Zhizhina, the Dutch Kirsten Nuyes and the German Peer Sonksen.

 

For its part, the ninth classified in the women's event, Carmen Gómez integrated the whole Europe 3, with the British Sian Rainsley, the Italian Giulio Soldati and the Hungarian Bence Lehmann.

 

Spain was very well represented, as well as our two triathletes also highlighted the choice of Spanish coach Joan Mayol as Head Coach of the Europa 2 team. To which the Spanish representation joined with Raquel González Cascales in the group of officials during these three days of competitions.

 

The modality offered a vertiginous rhythm with each triathlete facing a first swimming segment of 250 m by Xuanwu lake, followed by a cyclist turn of 6,6 km by the vicinity of Xuanwu park. Finally they made a lap of 1,8 km of running race before giving the baton to their teammate.

After the first 250 m swim, Gomez's teammate, the British Sian Rainsley led the competition.

 

However, the winner of the individual event, Brittany Dutton recovered the distances and was in the lead during the cyclist segment, to then give the witness in first position. On the other hand, at the end of this first relay, the Europa 3 team was running third, while the Spaniard Alberto González was starting his relief in fifth place.

 

Oceania maintained its advantage and reached the cycling sector with more than 20 seconds over its rivals. While González from Malaga performed an extraordinary relief, climbing positions to place his team in the first group and at the end of his relay, give up the turn in third position. At this moment the other Spaniard was in action, with Carmen Gómez fighting for the Europa 3 team in a second chase block along with the triathletes of America 2 and Asia 1.

 

The Galician offered a great exhibition during this exciting competition, in which together with the teams of Europa 1 and Europa 4 managed to reach and surpass the Oceania team on arrival at the T2. In a spectacular final of the race on foot, the Spaniard managed to take the lead to give the baton to the last reliever of his team.

After the first two segments, at the beginning of the final stage and the foot race, the teams of Europa 1 and 3 began an exciting duel to win the gold medal. Behind, and further behind, the Oceania team remained in third place at a few 35 seconds of the leaders.

 

Finally, the British Ben Dikstra achieved an advantage that would mean the triumph of the representatives of the whole of Europe 1, composed of Dikstra himself, the German Kristin Ranwig, the Danish Emil Hansen and the French Emilie Morier. 23 seconds away came the fourth member of the Europa 3 team, the Hungarian Lehmann, signing a memorable silver medal. The Oceania 1 triathletes completed the podium in third position. While Alberto González's team qualified in a remarkable fifth place.

 

This exciting competition marked the end of triathlon in these Olympic Games. of Nanjing. An appointment in which the Spanish representatives have shone in the three competitions, demonstrating their good competitive level and confirming themselves as great triathlon promises.
