The Olympic torch of London 2012 stays in Águilas

It is a gift from Marisol Casado, president of the International Triathlon Union and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who personally presented her last May in Athens.

The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics have not only left the gold medal in the long jump in the municipality of Águilas, obtained by the athlete José Antonio Expósito from Aquila, but since last night the city also has the official torch of the games.

It is a gift from Marisol Casado, president of the International Triathlon Union and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to Diego Calvo, the aquiline who chairs the Murcian Triathlon Federation.

The transfer ceremony took place last night, at the Águilas City Hall, in the presence of its first mayor, Bartolomé Hernández, and the Councilor for Sports, Diego Martínez, who together with other local authorities and the aforementioned presidents, witnessed the delivery of this unique gift, which will soon be on permanent display in the “Diego Calvo Valera” multipurpose pavilion.

In this way, Marisol Casado fulfills the public promise she made in Águilas, during the act in which the name of her partner and friend, Diego Calvo Valera, was given to the new municipal sports pavilion.

The torch, which was carried personally by Casado on his way through Athens, was designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and its triangular shape represents each of the three Olympic Games that London has hosted (1908, 1948 and 2012).
