Legese wins the Tokyo marathon in 2: 04 in the rain

It is the first Major marathon of the year.

According to the AFP news agency, Ethiopia achieved a double this Sunday in the Tokyo Marathon thanks to the victories of Birhanu Legese in the men's test and Ruti Aga in the women's race, in a test held under wind and rain.

Legese, of 24 years, who had an impressive debut in the test in Dubai in January last year, won in two hours, four minutes and 48 seconds, only 33 seconds more than his personal best time in Dubai, but the second best historical mark of the Tokyo test.

The Kenyans completed the podium with Bedan Karoki second (2hr 6min 48 seconds) and Dickson Chumba third (2: 08.44).

"I am happy. The rain was a bit annoying, but I'm happy," Legese said, expressing his hope to return for the Tokyo Olympics test next year.

In the women's event, the Ethiopians took the podium with the victory of Aga (2: 20.40), 21 seconds ahead of Helen Tolao and Shure Demise another four seconds behind.

More than 37.000 runners took part in the 12th edition of the test, including Japanese medicine Nobel Prize winner Shinya Yamanaka.
