UTMB Group launches the UTMB World Series in association with IRONMAN

The UTMB® World Series are one more step in order to revolutionize the sport of Trail Running.

From the alliance of the UTMB and IRONMAN, the UTMB® World Series with 12 events around the world where runners will try to get a place for the UTMB.

Starting in 2022, the UTMB® World Series will bring together some of the best international Trail Running events.

Inspired by the high standards of UTMB®, runners will be able to participate in the most beautiful events on the planet, and the UTMB® World Series will be the only place where runners can start their way to Mont-Blanc, France, where they will take to held the prestigious UTMB® World Series Finals.

The events will take place on six continents, giving all runners more opportunities to live the UTMB® experience on a global scale.

Four categories

There will be four categories in the UTMB® World Series: 20K, 50K, 100K and 100M, which will be based on km-effort.

A world-renowned formula to measure trail running distance, considering both the distance and the accumulated positive elevation gain to calculate the perceived distance.

 For example, 100M means 100 miles and represents 170 mile-effort.

The classification process

Under the new sports system, to gain access to the UTMB® World Series Finals, the best trail running runners on the planet must qualify by participating in the UTMB® World Series Majors or the UTMB® World Series Events over a period of 15 months.

The top 10 male and female riders in each of the 50K, 100K and 100M categories in the Majors events will achieve a place for the next edition of the UTMB® World Series Finals race

The top 3 male riders and the top 3 female riders in each of the 50K, 100K and 100M categories in the Events events will achieve a place in the UTMB® World Series Finals of the same category.

Test format

UTMB® World Series Finals

UTMB® World Series titles will be awarded at each of the three key distances of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc, known as OCC (50K), CCC® (100K) and UTMB® (100M), and qualification can only be achieved by participating at one of the UTMB® World Series or UTMB® World Series Majors events.

UTMB® World Series Majors

Three UTMB® World Series Majors will be held each year, where athletes can compete head-to-head in the Continental Series finals in the Americas, Europe and Asia / Oceania.

Each UTMB® World Series Majors will include at least one race in each category (50K, 100K and 100M) and elite and amateur finishers will have at least twice the chance of entering the UTMB® World Series Finals.

UTMB® World Series Events

From Europe, to Asia, Oceania, America and Africa, the UTMB® World Series Events are the best events on the planet.

Organized under the highest quality standards to bring the UTMB® adventure closer to runners from around the world, each event will include at least one qualifying race in the 50K, 100K or 100M categories.

These races will award Running Stones; 1 Running Stone will equal 1 entry into the UTMB® World Series Finals entry lottery, giving runners a chance to be on the starting line in Mont-Blanc.

Sports stars will also be able to enter the Finals based on their results in UTMB® World Series Events.

UTMB® World Series Qualifiers

he UTMB® World Series Qualifiers are the gateway to the UTMB® World Series with thousands of races around the world open to all.

Participation in a UTMB® World Series qualifying race is not required to begin the Series adventure, but participating riders will benefit from privileged access to UTMB® World Series events.

Calendar

While the full schedule for UTMB® World Series Events will be announced in the third quarter of the year, eight top-tier international events have already been confirmed in Europe, Asia and Oceania, including:

  • UTMB® Mont-Blanc (France, Italy, Switzerland)
  • Val d'Aran by UTMB® (Spain)
  • Thailand by UTMB® (Thailand)
  • Panda Trail by UTMB® (China)
  • Gaoligong by UTMB® (China)
  • Tarawera ™ Ultramarathon by UTMB® (New Zealand)
  • Ultra-Trail Australia ™ by UTMB® (Australia)
  • mozart 100® by UTMB® (Austria)
