Vansteelant and Mullan win in the TriStar of Mallorca

The Belgian Joerie Vansteelant won yesterday in Portocolom in a second edition of the TriStar Mallorca that was harder than expected due to the weather conditions, with rain and strong wind at some moments of the morning that were not an obstacle for the 700 triathletes who participated in the proof.

Just over 40 professionals fought in a victory that had its most complicated moment in the spectacular cycling segment (100 kilometers) in the double climb to Sant Salvador. Vansteelant completed the total 111 kilometers in 3h.42:51, and achieved victory in his first participation in a triathlon. He has made his debut at TriStar111 Mallorca after starting to swim for the first time this season. “I am very satisfied, I did not know what my result could be like before the start, I had never participated in a complete triathlon. I felt very good in the cycling segment, and even though I suffered a fall I was able to recover to give my best in the run race,” said Vansteelant.

The British Ben Howard was second with 3h.43:34 (after leading part of the cycling segment) and the German Johannes Moldan, winner of the last edition of the TriStar Monaco, was third. Due to the wet asphalt, some professionals had problems on the technical descent of Sant Salvador. The former cyclist José Antonio Cardona was the first Spaniard to cross the finish line, sixth, after an impressive comeback with the bike.

In women, Eimear Mullan was able to repeat his 2011 victory after a brilliant last segment on foot. “The weather in Mallorca was like it is in Ireland, at home… it was like training there!” said the Irishwoman jokingly after crossing the finish line in 4:12:49.

The British Tamsin Lewis was second in the Portocolom Yacht Club area, despite having just recovered from an injury. The podium was completed by another Briton, Anna Turvey. The first Spaniard was Marta Fernández de Castro, eighth overall.

The Swiss Gabriel Hopf and the Estonian triathlete Liis-Grete were the winners of TriStar55.5 Mallorca.
