A triathlete dies at the IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona 

This Sunday was celebrated HOMBRE DE HIERRO and the IRONMAN 70.3 in Barcelona, an event that attracted more than 5.000 triathletes from around the world.  

However, the day was marred by sad news: the death of an athlete during the cycling segment. 

According to the official statement of HOMBRE DE HIERRO, “two athletes suffered an accident” during the cycling segment of the race. 

“One of the athletes suffered a major medical episode” and, despite receiving immediate medical attention, died hours later in a nearby hospital. The other triathlete athlete was discharged without serious injuries. 

This is the full statement “We deeply regret confirming the death of a participant in the IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona triathlon.  

During the cycling portion of the race, two athletes suffered an accident. One of the athletes suffered a major medical episode and received on-site medical attention before being transported to a nearby hospital where he continued receiving treatment. Despite medical efforts, the athlete died a few hours later.  

We share our deepest condolences with the athlete's family and friends and will continue to offer them our support during these difficult times.  

The other athlete, who was also taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, was released without serious injuries. We wish you a speedy recovery.  

“We thank the security personnel and first responders who worked quickly to provide medical assistance to both athletes.” 

The triathlon community has reacted with dismay and sadness to this news. Various initiatives are being organized to support the family of the deceased athlete in these difficult times. 

Although organizations take extensive measures to ensure the well-being of participants, risks are always present in high-intensity sports like triathlon.
